Chapter 13

“Well, well, well,” Gabe drawled when Emma showed up at Wolfshead midafternoon on Tuesday. “Look what the cat dragged in.”

“Hi, Gabe,” Emma said, accepting his kiss. “Sorry I wasn’t here last week. I had some family business to take care of.” Not quite the truth, but I was too much of a coward to show up after Aidan and I had hot sex would probably shock even the typically impossible-to-embarrass Gabriel Phelan.

“I’m just teasing,” he said, giving her waist a squeeze, and dropped his voice into a mock whisper. “Things were really boring without you.”

“Oh? What happened?”

Gabe gave a shrug. “The usual. Nothing ever changes around here, that’s for sure.”

“Right.” Which unfortunately included her. She clearly hadn’t moved beyond her past—a fatal mistake when it came to Aidan.

Since he’d come back into her life, they’d had all the same tension, all the same fights…and all the same heat. It was how she’d ended up in bed with him, even though she’d vowed not to let him affect her.

Speaking of the man, he was coming down the metal staircase as he spoke with Brody. As soon as he saw her, an expression of unbridled heat flashed in his eyes, which he rapidly schooled.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t fast enough, because beside her, she felt Gabe stiffen.

“Whoa,” he said.

Whoa was right, because today, like every other day, the man looked good. Jeans skimmed down long legs; a Henley shirt stretched over a broad chest. Those cheekbones, slicing out prominently over his beard. A modern-day lumberjack with the strength to match.

And last Saturday night, she’d seen him naked.

She fairly itched to run her hands through his hair, to feel the bulge of his muscles under the pads of her fingers.

Without meaning to, she licked her lips.

No.

He and Brody came right up to them.

“Hey, Emma,” Brody said, giving her a half smile. If he knew what had transpired between her and Aidan last weekend, he wasn’t talking. Then again, Brody had always been a smart man.

“You’re back,” Aidan said without any other preamble. “For a visit? Or for good this time?”

Emma cleared her throat. “For good. And if you wouldn’t mind, I’d like to have a word with you. In private,” she added, intensely conscious of the fact that Brody and Gabe were staring at the two of them with considerable interest.

Once again, his eyes flared with heat. Whatever she was feeling, he was feeling it, too. This did not reassure her.

“Brody,” he said, without even looking at his cousin. “Talk to your mom and get the books closed for March, okay?”

“Got it.” Brody turned and practically vaulted up the metal stairs to the second floor.

“And Gabe?”

“Yeah?”

“Get on that project…the one you and I talked about last Friday.”

“Are you sure you want me to—”

“Go,” Aidan demanded.

Gabe muttered something and stalked off, ostensibly to do Aidan’s bidding.

When he was gone, Aidan pointed up. “My office?”

“Sure.”

“After you,” Aidan said, indicating the staircase.

When they were inside, Aidan shut the door, but didn’t lock it. Calmly, he walked over to his desk and sat down, elbows on his desk, a veritable picture of restraint.
