My eyes widened as I yanked my hands away from Apollo’s. I felt woozy—as if I’d been swept away by a strong tide. I shook my head and tried to concentrate. “That was wrong,” I told the god. “That was as a private conversation as private conversations get. I can’t believe you brought me there to listen to that.”

“Astra, are you okay?” Emma asked from somewhere behind me.

I kept my eyes glued to the calm and unapologetic god. Apollo’s expression was hard to read, but when he spoke, his voice seemed kind. How did this self-involved jerk manage to sound kind and considerate all the time?

“Why not? Why can you not believe I brought you to listen?” he asked serenely.

“It was private!” I stared at him, trying to understand why he’d shown me what he did. “You completely violated Jason’s privacy. If he wanted me to know what he said, he would tell me.” I turned my eyes away, feeling ashamed and angry and confused and a dozen other things all at once. “What are you trying to prove? What is the point of all this?” I shook my head mechanically back and forth, attempting to clear it.

“I’m not trying to prove anything,” Apollo said. “I have no specific agenda. I’m just showing you the truth.”

“Whatever truth that contained, it was private.”

“What are the two of you talking about?” Emma asked again, more insistent.

“He just took me to overhear a conversation between Jason and his mother. A very personal conversation that Apollo the nosy god seems to believe we had a right to overhear, even though it was private.”

“It was a truth any ghost passing by the two of them would be able to hear. Remember, my dear, the concept of privacy in Cassandra is very different than it is anywhere else. They have a much different concept of privacy,” Apollo tilted his head, “and he had no expectation of privacy there.”

“He certainly expected I wouldn’t be listening.”

“I don’t know that I would agree. You’re a witch. You could if you wanted to. He likely knows that.”

“Is one of your superpowers justification? Because I feel like you can justify anything even if it’s wrong.” I opened my mouth to object but let out a low sigh instead. “Forget it. Fine. Whatever.”

“Unsalted pretzel,” Archie muttered, watching.

“You wanna get in on this, birdbrain?” I snapped. “You have a viewpoint?”

“Hey, I’m being put through all this, too, you know!” Archie snapped back. “Sucks to find out that you’ve been making mistakes, doesn’t it, toots?”

“What mistakes?” I shot back. “What mistakes have I made?”

“I was talking about me, you self-absorbed twit!” the owl shouted, the words exploding out of him with a flap of his wings. “You worry about your lessons; I’ll worry about mine!”

Emma shifted her gaze back and forth between us, her face perplexed. “I don’t get it. What happened?” Emma inquired once more.

“That blindingly bright buffoon over there took me to peek in on some people. Mariana Black first,” I told her, taken aback by how calm and reasonable my voice sounded.
