Tuesday was an ordinary workday, with no sudden emergencies. Aunt Harriet called to tell me sheâd baked the apple pie and was about to make a healthy green bean casserole, honey-glazed sweet potatoes, and whole wheat stuffing.
âI thought I was making the stuffing,â I said.
âYou can make it next year.â
âIâve invited someone to join us,â I told her.
âHow lovely. In that case Iâll make another healthy dessert,â she said. âCranberry bread pudding. Iâve been wanting to try it.â
âSounds like youâre making most of the dinner,â I teased her.
âYouâve got enough to do now that youâre looking at wedding venues.â
âHow did you know that?â
âOur neighbors the Claymonts have a granddaughter who works at the Lynley Country Club. She happened to be visiting them and mentioned that you and Dylan came in to see the place.â
Cassidy. I laughed. âThere are no secrets in Clover Ridge.â
âSo? What did you think? I hear the Lynley Country Club is classy.â
âItâs beautiful, but a little too formal for my taste.â
âIâm sure youâll find just what youâre looking for,â Aunt Harriet said.
After work, I stopped at the supermarket and bought a few items for Thursdayâs dinnerâBrussel sprouts, salad ingredients, pineapple, and cranberries and an orange for a sugarless cranberry sauce. Dylan arrived home at six thirty, and we had dinner. Afterward, I made the cranberry sauce, then went into the living room to watch the late evening news with Dylan.
He slipped an arm around me. Smoky Joe sauntered over and plopped down between us. âFinished for the night?â
âJust about.â
âDid you ever stop to wonder why we have these elaborate Thanksgiving meals?â
âOf course. Itâs tradition,â I said.
âIt is now, based on some lore that might never have taken place. Least of all that turkeys were served at the first American Thanksgiving.â
âStill, itâs one of my favorite holidays,â I said as I snuggled closer to Dylan. âAnd you get to watch a football game.â
âTrue. I like turkey and many of the sides, but do we have to have so many?â
I laughed.
âAdmit it, you and Harriet could eliminate two if not four dishes, and weâd still have plenty to eat on Thursday.â
âBut making a large variety is fun. Itâs one tradition I really like.â
Dylan kissed my cheek. âTo tell the truth, so do I.â
