Robin first met Sérgio in Golden Gate Park. She was a runner and on weekends her route took her around the polo field where pick-up soccer games were always underway. One time a player sprinted off the field and quickly overtook her. As he passed, he turned around and started running backward. He was short and sweaty and wore his hair long.

“I see you every Sunday,” he told her. “You always wear red shoes. Like my jersey.”

She ignored him.

“You run like a vicuña,” he said.

She didn’t break stride. “What’s that?”

“It’s a kind of, how do you call it, camel that lives in the Andes.”

“A camel, huh? Thanks.”

His smile grew wider. He’d never had braces. Robin couldn’t believe he didn’t trip, and he was wearing soccer cleats too.

“If you saw one, yes, you would know I am paying you a supreme compliment. The vicuña has long legs and a slender neck and hair as soft as clouds. It is free and wild and the most beautiful creature on Earth.” He paused and leveled his brown eyes on hers. “Well, second most.”

As pick-up lines went, it wasn’t bad, and Robin had to give him points for originality. Then there was his ability to run backward. Well, that wasn’t to be overlooked either. She agreed to meet him later for a drink. He proved as charming sitting at a bar as he did running backward. They were living together within a couple of months. Their firstborn was a daughter and they named her after Robin’s mother. When a son soon followed, Sérgio’s dad received the honor.

On Sundays, Robin took Allie and Pietro to the park to watch their father play soccer. Sérgio always wore the bright red uniform of his beloved São Paolo Futebol Clube. He had matching jerseys made up for the kids too.

“I will teach our children to speak Portuguese and play futebol and cook feijoada,” he said. “And you will teach them about Martin Luther King and the Grateful Dead. That way they will have the best of both of us, and when they grow up, you and I will live together forever.”
