I hated Johnson had to see me taking care of business with Linda, but the truth was, in two days he and the others were due some cash and she was bullshittin’. I just figured once he saw that money, he’d be willing to forget all about that and anything else that might worry him.

“You straight?” I asked, wiping blood from Linda’s lip off my hand. He shot me a cross eyed look even though he shook his head saying yes. I had a feeling he was lying, and that’s what made me think there was a problem that ran a lot deeper than he was letting on.

He looked very confused. I wasn’t really sure if concern was wrapped up in that look, but truthfully, I didn’t really have time to think about it either. I just needed to know that he was on board and he understood what that meant.

“What you’d think about that punk Norman?”

Johnson didn’t answer right away. He looked at me a few minutes later and said, “How’d you even know it was him?”

“Well, I was leaving her house last night, after a serious session if you know what I mean, and I saw him look around then slipped toward the side of her place, when he thought no one was watching. So I played it cool and kept walking to my car. I got in and pulled off, then doubled back on foot, this fool was at her bedroom window by then. Once I knew it was him, I pulled up and figured we’d catch up with him later.” I shrugged as I slowed for a light.

“So, you saw him going to her window, but you just left?”

“Yeah, well, No and yes, I mean, I knew she wasn’t home, so I wasn’t tripping, I figured we’d roll up on his ass the next night.”

“But I thought you said y’all just finished handling business, where had she gone that fast?”

I sighed, and tried to clean up the confusion. “What I meant to say was she wasn’t in the bedroom. That’s what I mean.”

“Oh, okay, I see,” he said like he didn’t believe me. I couldn’t worry about that though, I needed to make a few more stops before we called it a night, and it was more important that he understood that.

If Johnson had any questions about what went down with Linda or anything else, he didn’t ask. After making a few more pick up stops, I was confident all kinds of questions should’ve been floating around in his head, and it concerned me that he wasn’t asking any questions.

When I pulled up in front of his place I stopped him before he jumped out.

“Look, are you okay with all of this?”

He looked at me; “All of what Hawk?”

“C’mon now nigga, don’t play me. We’re bringing you in to our little operation and we just need to know that you’re cool with what’s going on. I asked if you were ready to get your hands dirty,
