Noah finally made it home late the next evening and his legs would only carry him as far as the nearest seat in his great room. Every bone in his body was tired, but he knew that sleep wouldn’t come. What he should be doing is heading straight up to his bedroom to take a shower. He’d been in the same clothes for two days. The meeting with Remo had taken way longer than he had expected. Remo was really a bright kid and deserved more credit than he’d given him. When he got there, Remo was all prepared with a bunch of questions of his own. It was obvious that he was taking his career seriously. Most young players only wanted to know the bottom line; how much they’ll be paid. Of course, Remo was concerned about the money, but he also had other concerns. Remo’s family was dirt poor and he wanted to make sure that he not only would be able to support his family, but he wanted to make sure that he could do some good in his home country. They’d spent hours talking until finally Remo asked whether he would be willing to include Kay Bee in their face-to-face. Of course, he agreed. Kay Bee was another person that he didn’t give enough credit. He already knew how successful Kay Bee was as a producer, but what he didn’t know was how much integrity he possessed. When Remo called, Kay Bee dropped everything to come meet with them. Kay Bee didn’t hesitate to share with him the plans he had for managing Remo’s career. It was apparent that this wasn’t just something else that he was trying to add to his already impressive status. Kay Bee really did care. In the end, Remo decided to sign with Kay Bee and Noah was perfectly fine with that.

Satchmo entered the room with a slow trot. His usual gusto wasn’t there and hadn’t been since Natalie left. Satchmo walked right up to his master and rested his huge head on Noah’s knee. Noah rubbed his dog in his favorite spot behind the ears. He understood how his dog felt, because he felt the same way. It was as if Natalie’s presence haunted his entire house. Every inch of the place represented a reminder of her and he could swear that he could still smell the mesmeric scent of her perfume. The invitation that she’d sent him was still sitting in plain view on his coffee table. He almost cursed himself for not getting rid of the thing. He didn’t need the reminder—not now. Just about everyone in his family was due to leave to attend the grand affair the next morning. Between his two brothers and his sister (who was just as bad), he must have gotten over a dozen phone calls and texts; all with concern for him, but mostly pressuring him to attend the wedding with them. What he wanted was for the whole thing to be over with.
