Twenty minutes later, Ethel was put on a stretcher by paramedics and wheeled outside to a parked ambulance. Sonyai, Augustus, and Eugene were questioning Robin and Gerry in the clerical office.

“We were just talking!” Robin explained. “When suddenly she keeled over!”

“What, exactly, were you doing right before this happened?” Augustus asked.

“Talking!” Gerry said for the fifth time. “She was sitting in her corner, while me and Robin were minding our business on the other side of the room! Why are we getting interrogated here?”

“We told the paramedics what happened,” Robin chimed in. “They said this had something to do with her having diabetes.”

Eugene surveyed the room and noticed the cans on the desks. “Was she drinking one of these before it happened?”

Robin craned his head and noticed his can was open, but Ethel’s Diet Sprite next to it wasn’t. “Yeah.”

“If she’s a diabetic, wouldn’t she drink the diet soda and not the regular one?” Eugene asked.

“That one’s mine. She always drinks the diet.”

Gerry looked himself and said, “she must have took the wrong can.”

Sonyai and Augustus exchanged glances and Eugene narrowed his gaze at Robin.

The intercom line rang at Sonyai’s desk, she walked over and picked up the receiver. “Yes?” She then turned to Augustus and said, “keep them outside, we’ll be out there in a minute,” and slammed the phone down. “S.I.U. is here!”

“Who the hell called them?” Augustus hissed.

“What the fuck?” Gerry yelled.

“I did,” Eugene replied, and stepped forward to Robin. “We need to make sure this was actually an accident.”

Robin’s eyes went wide. “The fuck you trying to say?”

“Everyone calm down,” Sonyai ordered. “Let’s just cooperate with Special Investigations, answer all their questions truthfully… and sort this out later.”

Everyone put on stoic faces and filed out of the office.
