Baby, itâs me
Erin coming home from college was always considered a special event, which only happened four times a year. Like always, when it was close to that time, Malcolm was like a little kid on Kwanzaa eve. All he could think about was holding her in his arms and taking part in their legendary kissing session, which was the most they would do in their relationship since Erin had made it clear in the beginning, no sex before marriage, to which he understood and accepted. Her coming home this time, however, was different. His usual excitement was replaced with apprehension and worry due to his transformation. His obvious concern was if she didnât dig his new look, she would tell him to kick rocks, and there would be nothing he could do about it.
As Malcolm waited inside the OâHare airport terminal to pick her up, he paced back and forth amid the many stares of the crush of people walking to and from their flights. Onlookers thought this giant was surely an NBA or NFL player given his stature and build. Little did they know, however, on this day, he was only a giant on the outside. Inwardly, he was like a frightened student waiting outside the principalâs office bracing for the impending punishment.
After what seemed like an eternity, the announcement came that alerted Malcolm to Erinâs flight arrival. Utilizing his new height that allowed him to look clean across OâHareâs huge terminal in any direction, he peered over the masses of people and spotted his woman. Her large afro, big looped earrings and black shades gave her the look of a 1970s black woman. As she walked towards him with her carry-on bag flung over her shoulder and pulling her luggage bag, Malcolmâs reaction was priceless. His smile stretched from ear to ear. As she got closer to him, however, the anxieties of the unknown erased that smile and caused his worries to return. When she walked past him, he cringed.
Standing there next to McDonaldâs, which was their usual rendezvous spot inside the terminal, her face was lit up with anticipation of seeing her man whom sheâd missed something serious. Scanning in every direction she smiled and looked around as the deluge of people walked past her. When Malcolm walked up to her grinning, she didnât even take notice. He could have been anyone in that airport for all she knew. This undoubtedly was a bad sign for him that caused his heart to pound even more.
âErin?â he said after building up enough nerve to approach her.
âYes? Do I know you?â she asked with a half-smile, wrinkles appearing in her forehead.
âYes. Of course, you do. This is Malcolm, boo,â he said smiling nervously.
âHuh?â she said taking a couple of steps back.
âYes. Itâs me. I know I have a lot of explaining to do, but itâs me, boo.â Standing there feeling both confusion and suspicion, the only things about him she recognized was his distinct voice and the same chiseled facial features.
