SIXTEEN

“Once again,” Charis commented, her voice drained of energy. She sounded so tired. “You’re way ahead of me. What are you thinking?

Maybe it didn’t make any sense because they looked at this backward. If the Order had anything to do with this, they’d do everything they could to throw off the scent of the real reason those Kaminskis had been killed. At least the first one. Hopefully, the second lived so they could question him.

“What if this is a wild goose chase? The red herring. What if the Order orchestrated these bogus drops to throw us off of what they’re really planning?”

“You think there’s a real drop in there somewhere?”

“I think this game is being used to cover up what the secret society is really up to.” He talked faster as the adrenaline kicked in. They were getting closer. He just knew it. “What did you find out on that plate?”

“Nothing,” she answered in a tone dripping with disappointment. “Drew Phillips. It’s just some guy working for a delivery service.”

The information piqued his interest and triggered something he couldn’t quite put his finger on. “The first guy worked for Global Financial. Our guy in the hospital is a longshoreman.”

“There’s no connection between Williams and Beattie outside of the game. And now a delivery service?”

“He could be the getaway driver.”

“On a bike?” When he didn’t answer, the surprise at her news shocking him into silence, she went on. “He’s a bicycle messenger. Granted, he’s on a moped, but that still counts as a bike messenger. It’s totally random.”

Nothing was this random, which meant there had to be a connection there. He just had to find it. “Why would he have a nice sedan with smoked windows and two guys casing the streets if he drives a scooter for a living?” It made sense as soon as he asked the question. “It’s a front.”

“Chris, not everything is a conspiracy. You’re starting to sound as paranoid as Spencer.”

“Trust me on this.” He spoke faster, his words rolling together as the adrenaline kicked into high gear. “That’s our connection. That’s our way in.”

“What?”

“The guy behind that delivery service. Dig deeper on Phillips, sis. Find me everything on the parcel service and the guy running it. Guaranteed he’s taking money on something. No way would he be able to afford a car like that on a delivery messenger’s salary.”

Charis typed at a keyboard. She had to be sitting in front of her monstrous wall of monitors. “I’m on it. Anything else?”

“That’s good for now. You’re an angel.”

“So David tells me every day.”

“In the meantime, I’ll—” he stopped when the elevator doors opened and three of Seattle’s boys in blue rushed out. Fast. The two employees hurried over to them and, after a quick briefing, pointed directly at Chris.

Now what? His heart sank when the men didn’t hesitate on their approach. “Ah, shit.”

“Sir? How about you put that phone down and come with us?” Number One, the biggest and highest ranking according to the stripes on his collar, stated.
