ydin looked around Yaretzi’s house. The woman herself was sitting opposite him, looking as uncomfortable as if she were in a police station and not in the confines of her own home. Jaziel was collecting evidence of Adyil’s presence or his break-in. The company had provided copies of Adyil’s finger prints. If any were found in the flat, magic would let them know how long ago it was made. It was unlikely Adyil would have been so careful as to wear gloves. Or so they hoped. Technically, there was no crime here, since Adyil had a key, and he could always argue he was here to water the plants or check on the fish, both of which Yaretzi had. Of course, he might have to explain why Yaretzi would ask someone who lived hundreds of kilometres away rather than one of her neighbours.

In the meantime, there was the mystery of the attempt on his own life. No one had attacked Jaziel, only him. Aydin wasn’t certain what it meant. How could they have suspected he had any information or suspicions at all? Was it the question about Adyil’s eyes? Yet, he had posed that question to a robot and he was pretty sure only someone high up in the company could have known about it. And if it was someone up in the hierarchy, why had they agreed to providing Adyil’s fingerprints? Magic didn’t lie. The prints were Adyil’s.

“Looks like your theory is correct,” Jaziel said. “Adyil’s prints were on the dresser where the purse was kept, and they were made relatively recently. His magic is still detectable around the box, now that the company has given us a sample to compare it to.”

“You mean he was working for whoever killed Tatum?” Yaretzi asked, her eyes brimming. “Did he–” Her voice broke.

“No,” Aydin shook his head. “His accident was just prior to her death. He likely had no idea he was abetting the death of a former colleague. Had he known, he would have taken precautions against precisely the kind of thing that happened to him. That he was careless enough to leave his fingerprints points to the fact that he couldn’t have known anyone would look into it.”

“How is it that you didn’t hear of his accident?” Jaziel asked. “You both still work for the same company, and he was obviously more than a friend.”

“I was on vacation when it happened,” she said. “I returned only a week ago. I suppose no one cared to inform me because they must have thought I already knew. At least, that’s what the two people I asked told me.” She was clearly disgruntled.

“Happens,” Aydin said, rising. “Thank you for your co-operation, Yaretzi.”

“You’ll find them, won’t you?” Her expression was fierce, her amber eyes kindling in a way that made pain flare up inside Aydin. “Whoever killed her?”

“I will.” Of that Aydin had no doubt.

The attempt on his own life was something that really didn’t fit as yet, but he was certain it would.
