Chapter Twenty

ENZO

I was searching the crowd for Stephanie when I stopped in my tracks, cocking my head to the side. Why on earth was Michelle talking to Sophie?

As far as I knew, they’d never interacted before. Perhaps it was just friendly neighborhood small talk, but it didn’t seem that way. Michelle was staring at her with a strange, pinched smile on her face.

Sophie, on the other hand, somehow looked even more uncomfortable. As I watched the interaction from afar, trying to understand what I was witnessing, I realized something was very wrong. I needed to intervene, to save Sophie from whatever gossip Michelle would be trying to pry out of her.

Izzy would never forgive me if I let Michelle Rivera get wind of the fact that her daughter was a runaway. Just as that realization set in, I started forward, but Sophie was putting down her plate, shaking her head, and walking away. She looked upset. What had happened?

I headed in her direction, trying to fight my way through the crowded grassy area.

“Sophie, hey! Sophie, wait!” I called, darting around a couple dancing as she passed in front of me, several feet away and oblivious to my shouting. “Sophie!” I called again, but she didn’t stop. If anything, she seemed to be picking up speed. She continued to jog farther and farther away from me, then made a sharp left turn and headed toward my house.

I spun around, racing after her. “Sophie! Hey! Wait up!” She flinched at the sound of my voice, glancing over her shoulder at me, then rolling her eyes. As she reached the grass of my yard, she stopped finally, turning around with a dramatic drop of her shoulders.

“What is it?” she demanded.

“What’s…wrong? Are you done hanging out?” I asked, still trying to catch my breath, my hand pressed to my chest.

“No. I just need to pee. Why are you chasing me?”

“I thought you might be upset.”

“Why would you think that?” She scowled and, without waiting for me to answer, turned back around and approached the front door, disappearing inside quickly.

As the song that had been playing over Isaiah’s speakers ended, everyone began to clap, as they often did after a song they particularly enjoyed, as if there were an actual band waiting for the applause.

I looked around, frustrated that I still hadn’t found Stephanie. Dominic was nowhere to be found either. I spotted what appeared to be Evelyn reporting the broken board in her fence to Jude. Michelle was still alone, near the refreshments, as her eyes scanned the crowd. It was where you could find her at every social event, taking in everything happening throughout as she waited for a chance to pick up on some sort of scandal. It pleased her in a way I couldn’t understand. It always had. Michelle traded in secrets, it was her currency, and I realized then, I needed to shop.

I approached her, noticing as I got closer that she appeared shaken up, a rare sight for the woman most in our town considered perfectly put together.
