Chapter 13
Macleod was at a loss once Hope had departed. It was his fervent prayer that the weather would relent at least enough for a flight to Benbecula and from there, he would be able to somehow get over to the Monach Islands. But the snowstorm was relentless and he saw no aircraft depart. Surely if he could reach Benbecula, someone would be prepared to take him over the rough sea to Ceann Ear. It was only another fifteen kilometres.
Stuck in his hotel room, Macleod decided he needed to put the time to good use and first called his partner Jane. He had not had much time to speak the previous evening and now he made his apologies. Although she spoke back, he got the feeling she was pushing him off the call. There was this thing she had: if he was working then let him work. A few minutes later he was back at the window of the hotel looking at an incredibly quiet airport.
His mind wandered back to the characters on the island. His sudden announcement to Hope that the roll call looked like a team to make your own drugs was a bit of a wild response but the more that he thought about it, the more it seemed a possibility. After all, why else would all these people be there. But if they had been a pilot, a stewardess, a holiday rep, a travel agent, and a man with two bats that were different colours on either side, would he have announced they were opening an airport?
And what about the others? There was a fisherman there. Amanda Novak: why was she there, ardent tourist and good time girl? And a family. Where would you make the drugs? Surely everyone would have to be in on it. He could not make it fit. Not entirely.
And Kiera Harris? Another one who did not fit. Caught in the brothel house, an unknown with not a lot of past on record. Someone youâd not pay much attention to. Someone . . . disposable.
Macleod reckoned his mind was running away from him and stood up and grabbed his coat. A brisk walk to the terminal to grab a paper would help. Not that he would read it but otherwise heâd look like some sad and lonely individual. With a paper, heâd be a man of purpose. Except there were papers downstairs in the hotel lobby so the hotel staff would know.
Maybe he should have gone with Hope, but he did not want to miss any opportunity to get to the islands. Tucking his collar up, Macleod stepped out onto the crunchy snow and made his way along scraped pavements to the airport terminal. He saw a line of taxis wondering what else to do with their day because no one was travelling. A lone cleaner walked behind one of those large cleaning machines that reminded him of Star Wars. A security guard walked past and Macleod subconsciously pretended he had a paper and purpose to be there.
