Basic Level–No bonuses or modifiers.

36% to Novice Level. Strength and Agility requirements not met.

Tobias was happy with his advancement. At this rate, he would be able to level up as soon as he met the Strength and Agility requirements, and he wouldn’t even have to use a leveling up bonus to do it. Of course, he was still three levels away from having the requisite Strength and Agility, so he had plenty of time to keep practicing.

The group of three entered a Crow’s Nest common room that was nearly full. The only open table was in the corner along the front wall. Doulgorlig sat on one side with his back to the wall. Tobias sat across from the big man to give him room, and Christoph sat next to him.

Stanwick appeared a moment later carrying three mugs. “I’m assuming you lads are here for some food as well,” he said as he placed the drinks on the table.

“When have you ever known Doulgorlig to not want food?” Christoph asked mirthfully.

“Never,” Doulgorlig and Stanwick said at the same time, causing everyone to laugh.

“I will be back shortly, then,” the innkeeper said and returned to the bar area.

The three men all took long drinks of ale. The brew was good, but not nearly as satisfying as if it had been cold. A cold beverage of any kind would have been amazing after a hard morning of training.

“What’s on your mind?” Doulgorlig asked. “You got awfully quiet all of a sudden.”

“Oh, nothing,” Tobias said. “Just thinking about cold beverages.”

That was something he had completely taken for granted. The ability to open up his refrigerator and pull out a cold soda.

“What?” Christoph asked.

“You know, a beverage that is cold.”

“You mean like taking a drink from a cold mountain stream?” Doulgorlig asked.

“Yeah, something like that.”

“Cold water will just make you sick,” Christoph said. “Ale is the best, especially after a battle.”

Tobias couldn’t argue with the idea that ale was the best way to celebrate after a battle, but it probably wasn’t the greatest way to recover after strenuous exercise. He kept that thought to himself, though. Tobias was more concerned with learning about skills than discussing general nutrition.

“I’m making good progress on advancing my swordsmanship skill, thanks to you two,” Tobias said, “but I need to increase my strength too. Is there a way to do that without leveling up?”

“Yes and no,” Christoph said. “There are magical ways to boost attributes like rings, enchantments, and even spells, but they are temporary.”

“So, if you are using a ring, for example, to increase your strength in order to increase your swordsmanship skill, it is only good as long as you’re wearing that ring,” Doulgorlig continued. “If you take the ring off and drop below the strength requirement for a level, you lose all the benefits of that particular skill level until you put the ring back on.”

“And they don’t count at all for professions,” the Knight said. “You must have a pure Strength and Agility of ten to become a Knight, for example.
