SIXTEEN

As Olivia sleepwalked through the open door, Marie sent a pleading glance toward her sister. Sherri had always been dominant in their relationship, providing leadership; she’d know what they needed to do for their mother. But Sherri was distracted, focused on a curio cabinet across the room, her face set in grim lines.

She headed for the cabinet, triggering a violent windstorm that sprang from nowhere, slamming Sherri to the floor, throwing Marie into a wall, pinning her there.

Marie’s awareness contracted to a singularity of pain. She screamed, but the wind’s howl shredded the sound. Her breathing became laborious. Behind her, the wall softened like margarine in the sun. The wind stream forced her through, and she plopped into the room Olivia was using, heavily falling to the floor.

Doubting her ability to understand what had happened, she didn’t try—it was enough that she was safe, if only temporarily. Guilt set in along with relief as she remembered that her mother and sister were still in danger.

She climbed to her feet and staggered to the door. She heard loud voices and breaking furniture in the hallway. Her trembling hand wrapped the knob, but she couldn’t make herself turn it. Her stomach felt full of leaden butterflies. Marie released the knob and set her back to the door, sliding to the floor, covering her eyes.

I can’t be expected to deal with this kind of thing. I’m not a strong person. And who will it help if I get killed?

You don’t have to be afraid. Alien thoughts invaded her head, crawling blind like earthworms. I can give you power. I can make you strong. Very strong.

Marie whispered, lifting her face, uncovering her eyes. “Who are you?”

On the dresser, the long wrapped package. Take me up, possess me, and be done with terror forever. Let the world fear you instead.
