SIX

THERE WERE WORSE things than death.

Gina sat like a statue in the back seat of the luxury SUV for the longest drive of her life. A shaking sculpture with beads of sweat trickling down her face, dampening her top while her hands were jammed under clammy armpits. Her sneakered foot bounced on the floor mat.

Although she occasionally managed to take a long drag to quell her body’s tremor for a few seconds, breath burst in and out of her.

Osagie sat on the other side of the middle armrest he’d lowered, ensuring there was no accidental contact between them. Not speaking to her, he conversed with Idehen who sat in the front passenger seat beside Nekpen, the chauffeur.

Osagie’s intoxicating cologne and musk scented the air, reminding her of this morning—his sensual kiss, his stimulating embrace, his delightful promise.

How did a day that started on a wonderful note go so wrong? What offences did she commit, warranting this current situation?

Less than a week ago, her pressing concerns had been dealing with a plumbing problem at the gym.

Now her primary interest was surviving Christmas Eve at the hands of gangsters.

What a rollercoaster week it had been. The attraction of meeting Osagie in the park. The fear of waking up to him in her room. The adrenaline of fighting and running. The panic of encountering his dogs. The comfort of his arms in the aftermath. The laughter of sharing meals and his company. The anticipation after this morning’s kiss and the terror of watching him shoot a man.

If she’d been confused about what kind of man Osagie was, seeing him shoot Nigel without hesitation or flinching confirmed precisely what he was—ruthless, brutal, and forceful.

A man who wasn’t afraid of the law, who took the law into his hands.

Although she hoped not, Nigel could inform the police about his injury and press charges. How would she explain what happened if she survived the night?

About an hour after leaving Nigel’s flat, Nekpen drove into premises Gina didn’t recognise, through a raised barrier to a secluded underground parking spot.

Osagie left the car without talking to Gina. Nekpen didn’t get out.

Idehen came around and opened the door for her.

Heart rate skyrocketing, Gina stepped out and took a deep breath.

“Where are we?” she asked in a croaky whispery voice. She’d thought they would go back to Osagie’s house. He’d been calm and even affectionate there. She’d been hoping he would be more forgiving there too.

Instead, this place lit by flickering white, fluorescent bulb had dark, creepy corners. She couldn’t imagine Osagie being gentle or compassionate here.

She’d watched enough movies where people were shot in spaces like this. Shivering, she braced her arms around her body. How was she going to get out of this mess?

“This way.” Idehen pointed in the direction of a white door at the far corner.

Osagie walked about five paces ahead. His footsteps clipped and echoed, his expression stony and silent. He appeared disappointed, hurt.

She followed him, regret made her feel uneasy. Shoulders sagging, her gut twisted as she walked beside Idehen.
