Leandin was pacing the terrace that lined the main hall. Iâd never seen him so agitated.
âOh, thank the Creator.â
âWhat is so urgent?â I asked, approaching him.
âUrgent? You were gone all night, as was Orlaina. Aodhan is in a particularly foul mood.â
âHeâs always in a foul mood these days.â
âThis is different. I know what it is the two of you were doing, and youâd better pray to the Creator Aodhan has no suspicions. Now, what has Orlaina done?â
I eyed him, uncertain whether I wanted to share the entirety of it. But he loved her. No matter how it bothered me, or that it caused an uncomfortable heat of envy in me. He would never hurt her, and I trusted that.
âShe may have tested our thoughts on how the people could defeat the Torathar.â
âTested? You mean she led them to it. She interfered, and Aodhan is not happy. The Light and the Elvin have been destroying the Torathar all night. This morn, the Light King even approached the Dark King and offered his assistance in ridding Tenebron of the beasts. While itâs nice to see them on agreeable terms for a change, it still has Aodhan in a state.â
âAodhanâs state has been elevated since we came to this world.â
âYes, and you know who elevates it?â Leandin asked. âWho constantly pushes him to react?â
I stared at him as the pieces fell into place. The fracturing of his code began with Orlaina. His temperament shifted in her presence, his Darkness uncontrollable and his aggression heightened. All of it with Orlaina in the center. âOrlaina.â
âExactly.â
I raked my fingers through my hair. Iâd known she was an impetus for his mood changes, but I never realized her effect ran that deep.
âOrlaina is his undoing. He thinks she is his reward, but his obsession with her has tipped him over the edge.â Even as I said the words, the truth of them hit me. The incident with Fioch may have pushed him further to the Darkness, but Orlaina had been the impetus. âThe more she fights him, the further it drives him from his code.â
âYes. Unlike the darker gods in the other families, your power ties to the code the Creator instilled in you. Iâve always thought it was the connection between you five and the five of us. Light and Dark are opposing powers, but the code keeps your power in check and restrains it. Using that Darkness to control, punish, and protect is what binds us as a family. It is not the five of you who are the outliersââ
âItâs Orlaina.â I sat, the heaviness in my heart too great to stand.
âI believe so. She straddles the line between Light and Dark. Her gifts lean both ways, but there is a fire in her that is not within my Light brothers and me. Her emotions fuel it and drive her closer to the Dark power that runs through the five of you.â He looked away, out into the expanse that overlooked the mortal world. âThatâs how I came to realize she belongs with you.
