It should’ve really come as no surprise that Dean has a motorcycle. It just fits his personality. But it’s not the most stealthy vehicle. Still, the ride distracts me enough to alleviate my nerves as we head toward Aiden Lipinski’s apartment.

Before we left, Dean ran through our game plan. He’ll stop long enough for me to hop off the bike and get inside, then circle around to give me time to take Lipinski by surprise and him time to scope out any potential gunmen protecting Lipinski. Once I’m done finding out who sent him, Dean will be waiting outside.

The element of surprise is my biggest asset here. Not to mention the fact that I’m counting on this being Lipinski’s current address. Hopefully he’s home alone and unarmed.

We roll up to the dilapidated row of townhouses wedged between the airport and the Wind Tunnel. The roar of airplanes and traffic means this place is never quiet.

I hop off the bike and Dean mutters, “Good luck,” before rolling away.

Creeping close to the building to avoid being seen through any windows, I locate number seven and walk up the few steps to the front door, which is unlocked.

I step into the living room that’s open to the kitchen in the back of the house. The TV glow allows me to see that the place is littered with garbage, oversized ratty furniture, and other clutter. But my eyes are drawn to what’s on the makeshift coffee table: bags of white powder. There have to be at least fifty of them.

I hear movement from up the stairs and flatten myself against the wall, praying to God that he’s here alone.

The footsteps carry to the top of the staircase and then down to my level. He doesn’t notice me in the shadows, hidden with the help of Wes’s suit.

I shoot lightning at the TV, snapping Lipinski’s attention to me. He lunges across the room, likely for a weapon, but I catch his arm before he reaches it. Slamming him against the wall, I shout in his face, “The girl you raped in Hopman, who told you to do that?”

He stutters. “I…I don’t know anything, man. That was just a misunderstand—”

I punch him in the gut. “Don’t fucking lie to me!” I growl. His breath is rancid, but I don’t move.

“Listen,” he groans, “I was just told I could make some money. He said I might be arrested but he’d take care of it. Said I could have some fun and make some extra cash, that’s all.”

I toss him to the floor, zaps erupting between my fingertips as I stand over him.

“Some fun? You call putting a woman in the hospital fun? You’re disgusting.” I kick at him but he grabs my foot and drops me to the floor.

We struggle. He tries to keep me at bay long enough to grab his gun from its hiding spot on the other side of the room. I hold off on zapping him. I need him to be able to talk.
