Running hot water into a soapy pot and leaving it there feels good (and easy) in the moment, but that moment won’t last. There’s not much grosser than a pot of cold soak-water with bits of last night’s dinner floating in it. Nobody wants to stick her hand in that, and it’s just too tempting to convince yourself that it probably needs another day of soaking.

And honestly, the most adamant soakers tend to have sinks full of dirty dishes. (Yes, I said it.) So pouring out the dirty soak-water is a gamble. If the dirty water hits a spoon at exactly the right force and angle to send the nasty soak-water right onto the floor, or the counter, or your shirt, that cleanup will be a lot bigger hassle than just washing the pot in the first place.
