Disadvantages:

Restrictive – no facility for exploration of responses;

Reductionist – by their nature, psychometric tools reduce the responses of individuals to numerical values in the most efficient way possible;

Reliant on understanding of population – employees have to be sufficiently literate, articulate and able to introspect in order to complete self-report questionnaires;

Open to temporary bias – anxiety, boredom, fatigue, illness, suspicion or a participant’s desire to fake, acquiesce or confront can all influence and bias the way in which people respond to psychometric instruments;

Norm-based – ‘scoring’ individuals accurately is based on the accuracy and coverage of the available norm data. Many available psychometric tools use outdated or inapplicable norm groups – it is the researcher’s responsibility to check comparison norm data before using a psychometric instrument;

Existence of many poor psychometric tools – many researchers and test publishers have made available tools that are not sufficiently robust for general use. They may suffer from low reliability, low validity or both. Such information may not be immediately obvious to a researcher considering selection of an instrument from a range of options, but must be sought prior to making a decision. See the sections on reliability and validity, above, for guidelines in instrument selection.
