Chapter 19

Dracula’s Spiderweb

The human traffickers had been captured and the road had been cleared in time to open up the tunnel leading them to Germany by way of France.

Though neither of them spoke, they silently enjoyed the classical music on the stereo.

Damon kept his eyes on the road and listened to the GPS while Althea admired the nature they drove past.

Around noon, they reached a mountain where a curved road led them to a small medieval castle at the top. The castle looked old and worn down but that wasn’t what frightened Damon.

As his eyes fixated on the small castle he was driving toward, Damon’s face turned paler than a corpse and his lips parted in shock.

Althea instantly noticed the shift in him and asked, “What's wrong?”

With a deep breath his gaze shifted from the medieval castle to Althea’s face. “I’ve heard about this place, and I know the Fader who lives here.”

“I'm guessing you're not a fan,” Althea said, trying to understand his pale face and slightly frightened expression.

Damon bit down on his lip before he asked, “Have you ever heard the stories of Count Dracula?”

“The vampire,” she said. “Yes, of course.”

With a stiff face Damon slowly spoke, “The tales of Vladimir, the Fader who lives here, are what inspired the folklore behind that character.”

Althea's lips parted as her eyes widened in horror and she listened intently to Damon’s words.

“He is by far the creepiest man I have ever met, and all Faders are on edge when he is around. My friend Thomas and I have advocated to Charles many times that he needs to be contained. Thomas stabbed him once because he got so pissed at the offensive things he says, but unfortunately it didn’t kill the twisted bastard. The only person who likes him is Charles and I've never been able to understand why. He even lets him get away with things all other Faders would be punished severely for.”

“What does he do? He’s not a vampire, is he?” Althea asked with a slight tremble in her voice.

Damon turned his head to see if she was serious. “You know vampires aren't real, right? I said Dracula was inspired by him, not based on him.”

Althea furrowed her brow and leaned forward to look up at the creepy castle again. “I'm not arrogant enough to think I know everything about this world. If you asked humans about Earthens and Faders they would laugh. It doesn’t seem so far-fetched to me that vampires exist too.”

“So you believe in vampires?” Damon asked in a mocking tone.

“No, but my mind is open to the things I do not understand. I don’t know everything about this world and neither do you.”

“I would say that after being alive for seven hundred years I’ve come to understand this world pretty well. If vampires were real, I would have discovered them by now,” Damon argued.

Althea squinted her eyes with an edge to her tone. “Those who say they know the most are those that understand the least.
