The water got deeper suddenly, and the boys bigger. It was up to her waist. Was she shrinking, or was the water deeper here? Each possibility seemed worse than the other! Either way, they were going to get dunked.

"Hurry, Merlain, hurry! You're shrinking!"

She knew that she was. She should have had no confusion: with the boys getting bigger, it had to be shrinkage, not the water. She moved faster, and the water continued to rise as she shrank down into it. It came up around her neck.

She held the others high in her two hands, though they were now overlapping them and getting heavy. She took three more steps; then all four of them were in the water together.

She could see the castle on the island. It seemed far away. Very far. She was too tired to swim well; she could never get there.

She took a breath, swallowed water, and sank beneath the heaving surface.
