Fenella and Daniel arrived at the designated restaurant a few minutes before six. They were shown to a small, private room at the back. The musicians from the orchestra were already there, standing together sipping wine and chatting.
âAh, there you are,â Harry said. âHave some wine. Iâve already had too much.â
âWeâve only been here a few minutes,â Charlie said.
âAh, but thatâs where I was clever,â Harry laughed. âI started drinking at lunch and I simply didnât stop.â
âYouâre brave, being drunk in front of a police inspector,â Kayla said.
Harry laughed. âIâve nothing to hide. Oh, wait, that isnât true at all. Iâve plenty Iâd prefer to hide, but Iâve been told there are no secrets during a murder investigation. Is that true, Daniel?â
âEverything you share with the police helps to make their job easier, certainly,â Daniel replied. âMurder investigations are complex and time consuming. The less the police have to dig for information, the better.â
âAnd theyâll have full access to my criminal past, wonât they?â Harry asked.
âThereâs a national database, so the police here should have access to anything in that database,â Daniel explained.
âMaybe I should simply turn myself in,â Harry said with an exaggerated sigh. He finished his glass of wine and poured himself another with an unsteady hand.
âTurn yourself in?â Daniel echoed. âAre you confessing to murder?â
It canât be that easy, Fenella thought as she took a glass of wine from Charlie.
âOf course not,â Harry said. âI didnât kill Rochelle, but Iâm sure, with my past, Iâll be on the top of the list of suspects. Inspector Lowe is probably getting ready to arrest me as we speak. All the more reason for drinking too much, I believe.â
Daniel held up a hand. âThat isnât how murder investigations work,â he said. âWhatever youâve done in the past, the police wonât arrest you for Rochelleâs murder unless they feel they have evidence to support your guilt.â
âWe should all sit down,â Charlie said loudly before Harry could speak again. âHere,â he said, handing Daniel a glass of wine.
Daniel took a sip of his drink and then slid into a chair. Fenella sat down next to him and Harry took the seat opposite Daniel. Kayla sat next to Harry with Louis on her other side and Charlie took the seat next to Daniel.
âIsnât this nice?â Harry asked sarcastically. âCan you feel the desperation in the air? Weâre all convinced weâre about to be arrested at any moment.â
âIâm more worried that I might be the next victim,â Kayla said. âRochelleâs murder doesnât make any sense. No one had any reason to kill her.â
âIt had to have been an accident,â Louis said. âShe must have fallen in the car park and hit her head or something. The police will make a big fuss out of their investigation and then very quietly tell everyone they got it wrong.â
âI hope youâre right,â Kayla said. âI havenât slept a wink since Rochelle died.â
âUntil we have the official verdict, anything is possible,â Daniel said. âHaving said that, I believe Rochelle was murdered.
