ANDY BRETTON went to work again with the big ring of keys, and while he tried to find the one that would fit the rusty lock Jimmy quickly outlined for the old man what had happened — sketched the developments in Mexico and what he had discovered about Saigoni. “Revolution is the only answer,” Delcourt nodded vigorously, “For that you need a leader — and he is right here in our hands. Avila Morelos is in a cell just around that next corner. Take him out of here with us and you will have Toledaro trembling in his palace!” Avila Morelos, the young revolutionary chieftain who had been Toledaro’s chief rival! The descendant of one of Mexico’s revolutionary heroes, he was just the man Operator 5 needed to consolidate popular support behind the sporadic rebellions his men were fanning into life!

As soon as Hugh Delcourt was free he started on a run for Avila Morelos’ cell, clasped the bars and hoarsely whispered the good news to the prisoner, while Andy Bretton found the right key and unlocked the door. The handsome young Mexican’s eyes flashed with excitement as he strode out from the bars and clasped the hands of his deliverers. “Gracias, amigos!” he whispered. “This day I am in your debt — but soon it may be given to me to repay you!” Back through the winding corridors toward the big front gate Jimmy Christopher led the way. Only silence greeted them. Apparently their escape had not been discovered — until suddenly his keen eyes caught a flicker of sunlight on the barrel of a gun. “Down!” he shouted, just as a volley of lead poured into the corridor from one of the entrances to the quadrangle. Back on their feet, the uninjured fugitives hotfooted it for the gate — and the safety of the car that waited for them outside the prison. But now the corridors were ringing with shouts and orders. Soldiers were running from every direction, trying to cut them off; bullets were seeking them, slapping against the walls and ricocheting crazily as they glanced off stone pillars. They seemed to have charmed lives as they raced out of the building and made a dash for the heavy gate in the adobe wall that surrounded the prison — but one of those wild ricochets had hit Hugh Delcourt. He was limping badly, barely able to keep on his feet. There were two soldiers on guard at the gate, but Jimmy and Andy Bretton shot them down — only to have a dozen more come running from the prison doorway they had just left. Behind those were more — the whole garrison was now turning out. Through that gateway Andy Bretton and Richard Wilson plunged, Jimmy Christopher and Hugh Delcourt close behind them — but just at the portal the old man’s wounded leg seemed to give way beneath him. He pitched to one side and grasped at the heavy gate. Jimmy whirled, tried to spring to his aid — but the metal gate clanged shut and was barred from the inside.
