THE Swiss roads were alive with military guards. For some reason Etoria had not attacked Switzerland — perhaps because of the inaccessibility of these mountain passes — but the Swiss by no means deluded themselves into a feeling of security. At the rate of advance of the Etorian army, it would be only a matter of days before the little mountain country would be nothing but an island in a sea of Etorian conquest, cut off from the world. Jimmy Christopher began to feel the need of some sleep, but he drove himself and the Renault mercilessly until they reached the Etorian frontier. Here they discarded their roles of press correspondents, and Jimmy assumed his new one, that of Herr Jacland, secret envoy from Allemania. An agent of the Etorian espionage service met them at the frontier. They transferred to a huge Mercedes and continued their journey toward Napolti. The agent was a thin, wiry man with shrewd eyes that kept covertly studying Jimmy all the way in. His name was Verbenna, and he seemed to know the girl well, addressing her as Antoinette. The car was driven by a chauffeur, and the three of them sat in the rear, the girl between the two men. Jimmy fought back his weariness, watching the countryside that they passed through. Here, there was no demoralization. They passed countless columns of orderly, marching troops, going up to the front. But there were no cannons. Instead, Jimmy saw huge caterpillar trucks, with trailers attached. These trailers were somewhat similar in shape to gasoline trucks, except that there was a turret in the rear, where two soldiers sat, and a peculiar sort of double nozzle that projected at an angle from the center of the round tank. Verbenna, the agent, saw him looking at one of these trucks that they passed in the road, and he chuckled. “You see there, Herr Jacland,” he said, “the source of the power of the Etorian army. Those trucks carry the instruments of destruction which have broken the backbone of the French defense. Those trucks are destined to roll across Europe, the forerunners of the new Etorian Empire of the World!” Verbenna’s thin, ascetic face revealed a strange, fanatic zeal as he spoke. Jimmy shuddered at the thought of the two hundred thousand Frenchmen who had perished that day as the first major step of Etoria toward world empire. He said mildly, “I understand that you have already given the Americans a taste of your green haze and its terrible lightning?” Verbenna nodded, chuckled again. “A portion of New York was destroyed the day before yesterday. But our premier has halted the green haze, and has given the United States until noon tomorrow to meet his terms.” “His terms are very severe?” Jimmy asked, keeping his voice level. Verbenna shrugged. “Severe or not, they will be met. America has no choice. Premier Straboni has promised to check the green haze, provided the United States proceeds itself to demolish its munitions plants and chemical factories, and to disarm completely.
