OPERATOR 5 stood at rigid attention, facing Z-7 across the desk, in the inner office of WDC-13. General Falk sat beside the Washington chief, his eyes icy. From an adjoining room came the clatter of teletypes as fresh reports streamed into the headquarters. These were forgotten now. A member of the Intelligence service, accused of high crimes in time of war, stood before his chief. âYou understand, my boy,â Z-7 said huskily, âour procedure in a matter of this kind. Fortunately for us, an offense like yours occurs only rarely in the service. I am grieved, more than I can tell you, that my duty requires me to press the charges against you, for you are as dear to me as a son. You will be tried before a tribunal of your fellow officers. They will consider the evidence. They will decide your guilt and pronounce sentence upon you. Before you are brought before them, you have an opportunity to explain â now.â âI have no defense, Chief,â Operator 5 declared. âI admit my guilt.â Z-7 winced. âYou face serious consequences, my boy. Why â in Godâs name, why did you do it?â Operator 5âs eyes darkened. âI warned General Staff that I would do everything in my power to counteract their orders. I am ever more convinced now than I was that our Army is certain to be destroyed if their strategy continues. It is an absolutely fatal move! If I am guilty of treason, it is because I am pledged to maintain â not the stupidities of General Staff, but the welfare of the nation!â Major-General Falkâs face went white with fury. Z-7 rose slowly, his face a graven mask. Jimmy Christopher leaned forward; and now his words carried the ring of steel. âWe have no defense against the heat-force of the enemy. Our western advance is giving the enemy a chance to turn it upon us and spread utter devastation. You have already seen the first results. If the Army persists in advancing, it will be completely destroyed. If our Navy attempts to stop the advance of the Yellow fleet toward the Panama Canal, it will be plunged to the bottom of the ocean. On land and
on sea and in the air we will be left utterly defenseless â because General Staff has blindly ordered it! âOnce our Army is crushed, the Yellowese will swarm east. Once our Navy is sunk the east will be without protection and a second invasion will sweep in from the Atlantic. Invasion from the west! Attack from the east! Our nation, our people caught in the jaws of a war trap! No possible hope of rescue! Then the United States will cease to exist and this nation will become a colony of the Yellow Empire!â General Falk sneered. Z-7âs eyes flickered with uncertainty as he listened. Jimmy Christopher pressed on. âThatâs the plan of the Yellow command, plain to be seen. Our only possible hope from that fate is to preserve our defenses against the time when we can fight the Yellow forces on equal terms.
