MYSTERY SUB AGAIN SIGHTED!

HOSTILE CRAFT LURKING IN GULF!

Strange Underwater Vessel, Nationality Unknown,

Disappears When Seen.

South Coast Feels Rising Terror.

“Our Coast Guard is searching for that sub, Dad, but they are hampered by shortage of fuel. Terror — yes! It will grow. That sub means a planned invasion — there is no disguising the fact. Before this, the world battle for oil has meant revolutions and invasions and attacks. Now, unless we stop it, the United States is going to be trampled out of existence!” Operator 5 sank wearily into a chair. Tim Donovan perched on the arm of it, his eyes now clouding with disappointment. Jimmy Christopher looked at him and smiled. “Something wrong, Tim?” “Gee, I thought maybe you’d be showing me a new trick, Jimmy,” the lad said plaintively. “I bet you haven’t got any more than can fool me as the others did.” “We’ll see about that, Tim!” Operator 5 rose alertly. “Keep your eyes open, because I am going to fool you. I’ll give you a demonstration of a magical production of fire and water right under your eyes. Now watch!” Jimmy Christopher opened a drawer of a chest, removed a black cloth from it.

He tossed it to Tim, and the boy examined it minutely. Finding nothing suspicious about it, he returned it, and Operator 5 flapped it in the air. “Nothing concealed in it, Tim — nothing whatever. Yet, when I spread it over my arms, like this — when I make a mystic pass, like this — and when I invoke the magical powers — there!” Jimmy Christopher whipped the cloth away and disclosed in his right hand an ordinary drinking-glass filled to the brim with water! Tim Donovan’s eyes opened wide. Operator 5 passed the glass to him carefully, to avoid spilling it. “Any guesses, Tim?” he asked with a smile. “You see, the glass is so full that a slight move makes the water run over the brim. I couldn’t have had that tucked in my pocket somewhere, could I?” He tossed the cloth aside. “As for the second half of the trick, I’ll do it right before your eyes! Watch!” He opened his coat with his right hand, reached into his inner pocket with his left and produced, before the astounded Tim, a candle — burning! “There you are,” he remarked, placing the lighted candle in a holder. “Got it figured out?” “Gee, you couldn’t have kept a burning candle hidden in your pocket either, Jimmy!” the boy exclaimed. “You’ve certainly got me fooled again! How’d you do it?” “Take a few minutes to figure it out, old-timer!” Operator 5 settled again into the chair, and his smile faded. He found his father gazing at him seriously. Ex-Operator Q-6 asked quietly: “Jimmy — need we depend on our oil wells, or even on Yerian’s process? Aren’t there other ways of producing oil?” “Yes — but they are beyond our reach, or else the means have never been developed to a scale big enough to supply our needs, Dad,” Operator 5 answered.
