MYSTERY SUB AGAIN SIGHTED!
HOSTILE CRAFT LURKING IN GULF!
Strange Underwater Vessel, Nationality Unknown,
Disappears When Seen.
South Coast Feels Rising Terror.
âOur Coast Guard is searching for that sub, Dad, but they are hampered by shortage of fuel. Terror â yes! It will grow. That sub means a planned invasion â there is no disguising the fact. Before this, the world battle for oil has meant revolutions and invasions and attacks. Now, unless we stop it, the United States is going to be trampled out of existence!â Operator 5 sank wearily into a chair. Tim Donovan perched on the arm of it, his eyes now clouding with disappointment. Jimmy Christopher looked at him and smiled. âSomething wrong, Tim?â âGee, I thought maybe youâd be showing me a new trick, Jimmy,â the lad said plaintively. âI bet you havenât got any more than can fool me as the others did.â âWeâll see about that, Tim!â Operator 5 rose alertly. âKeep your eyes open, because I am going to fool you. Iâll give you a demonstration of a magical production of fire and water right under your eyes. Now watch!â Jimmy Christopher opened a drawer of a chest, removed a black cloth from it.
He tossed it to Tim, and the boy examined it minutely. Finding nothing suspicious about it, he returned it, and Operator 5 flapped it in the air. âNothing concealed in it, Tim â nothing whatever. Yet, when I spread it over my arms, like this â when I make a mystic pass, like this â and when I invoke the magical powers â there!â Jimmy Christopher whipped the cloth away and disclosed in his right hand an ordinary drinking-glass filled to the brim with water! Tim Donovanâs eyes opened wide. Operator 5 passed the glass to him carefully, to avoid spilling it. âAny guesses, Tim?â he asked with a smile. âYou see, the glass is so full that a slight move makes the water run over the brim. I couldnât have had that tucked in my pocket somewhere, could I?â He tossed the cloth aside. âAs for the second half of the trick, Iâll do it right before your eyes! Watch!â He opened his coat with his right hand, reached into his inner pocket with his left and produced, before the astounded Tim, a candle â burning! âThere you are,â he remarked, placing the lighted candle in a holder. âGot it figured out?â âGee, you couldnât have kept a burning candle hidden in your pocket either, Jimmy!â the boy exclaimed. âYouâve certainly got me fooled again! Howâd you do it?â âTake a few minutes to figure it out, old-timer!â Operator 5 settled again into the chair, and his smile faded. He found his father gazing at him seriously. Ex-Operator Q-6 asked quietly: âJimmy â need we depend on our oil wells, or even on Yerianâs process? Arenât there other ways of producing oil?â âYes â but they are beyond our reach, or else the means have never been developed to a scale big enough to supply our needs, Dad,â Operator 5 answered.
