Despite Shay’s observation, Alex did shower.

And shave, blow dry his hair, trim his fingernails and brush and floss his teeth. He also took an inordinate amount of time deciding on the right thing to wear before he settled on khaki slacks and a pale yellow polo shirt.

Once dressed, he remade his bed and straightened the shoes on the rack in his closet. Then he got a towel and dusted off his dresser and nightstands. When that was done, he padded back into the bathroom to check his hair.

He made a face at his reflection. This is really stupid, Morrison. Go downstairs. You’re too old to be embarrassed. So what if the lady caught you without your pants? So what if you kissed her? It’s not as if you haven’t been with a woman or two since Allison died.

Not that he had any intention of pursuing that kind of intimate relationship with Shay. He didn’t. After all, despite that ill-advised kiss, he had a rule about mixing sex with his family life, and thanks to Shay’s friendship with the boys and Beau, she was definitely part of the latter—whether he liked it or not.

Not that he didn’t like it. He didn’t care, one way or the other. Did he?

Of course not. Although, he had to admit, there had been a second or two downstairs when his hands-off policy had seemed pretty confining. But then, so had his boxer shorts. He couldn’t remember a time he’d ever felt so carnal. So greedy. So totally, quickly, completely aroused....

He gave a snort of self-disgust. Dammit, he was not going to dwell on it. It was simply one more irksome event in a string of similarly annoying incidents, from having his car run out of gas to incurring the wrath of one housekeeper, four potential nannies and the head of an employment agency. Not to mention having root beer dumped in his lap and nearly becoming a new statistic—first person to drown in a grocery store. Hell, even his dishwasher had turned against him.

None of which would have seemed so bad if Shay hadn’t been right at hand to witness each and every disaster....

Not that her opinion mattered.

It didn’t.

So why was he standing around up here like some spineless coward?

He wasn’t, he thought decisively—at least, not any longer. Straightening his shoulders, he headed for the door.

He didn’t know what he expected to see when he walked into the kitchen, but it wasn’t what he found. The floor had been mopped, the groceries put away and the dishwasher emptied. The boys were sitting quietly at the counter, coloring.

Alone.

“Where’s Shay?” he asked, after a casual perusal of the pantry and the anteroom.

Brady looked up from his picture. “She went home.”

“She did?”

“Uh-huh.”

“She left you a note.” He pointed to a sheet of paper on the counter.

Alex walked over and picked it up.

Alex— Thanks for the ride. Sorry for any inconvenience. The boys were getting hungry, so I tossed together a casserole and put it and some rolls in the oven.
