We see here that in the Buddhist context, it is âintellectual views and theoretical understandingâ that the tenth precept must be addressing. But like Buber, Dogen is more specific than that. It is what he calls âthe conceptual Buddhaââor Dharma or Sanghaâthat is the problem. Here is a perhaps more typical Zen expression of this point:
Even the mere mention of the word âBuddhaâ should make a man rinse his mouth for three days. If one is such a man, when he hears someone say, âThe very mind is Buddha,â he will cover his ears and run away.[3]
