Chapter

17

ASIM STARED at Seth and Jude’s ridiculously happy grins over brunch Saturday morning. He had finished filling his friends in on the catastrophe that was his grand gesture and Ángel’s broken promise to call the day before. “Chump. That’s the word, right?” he asked and shoveled his sugar-laden pancakes into his mouth.

“We think it’s sweet. Right, Jude?” Seth elbowed his partner in the ribs.

“Yeah. Sweet,” Jude mimicked back with a lack of conviction and a swig of his orange juice. Jude’s eyes tracked to Seth, but not before they traced the upper curve of his eye in a half circle. Jude was king of the exasperated eye roll. The worried looks had passed back and forth several times already, but so far, neither of his friends had said anything remotely constructive. If they thought he was an idiot, he wished they would just say it. Asim was beyond over being left out of their silent conversations.

“Seriously. Ugh. I’m so confused by him. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong.”

Seth glanced at Jude, who gave a barely perceptible nod in return.

Seth patted Asim’s arm in a sympathetic gesture that left Asim ready to regurgitate his breakfast all over the table. “Okay. So it’s possible your idea might have been a little bit terrifying to someone who’s afraid of the B-word,” Seth explained.

“The B-word?”

“Boyfriend,” Jude answered with another master-class level roll of his grayish blue eyes. “Look. You kind of hit him with the commitment train a little fast.”

Seth laughed irreverently. “You’re one to talk.”

Jude puffed his lips into an undignified pout, until Seth kissed him on the cheek and grinned. Jude smirked in reply. They shared another moment that excluded Asim and everyone else in the world entirely.

“Would you two knock that shit off? I’m dying here. I’m so tired of your fucking silent conversations. Share with the rest of the class.” He prompted them with a roll of his hand before downing his mimosa.

Jude heaved a put-upon sigh, as though having to keep his hands off his fiancé for an hour-long meal was asking too much from him. “Fine. I might have been driving that particular express train when I first met Seth. I made him breakfast in bed and asked him to meet my family after our first night.”

“Second night,” Seth corrected.

“First date, second night.” Jude wagged his eyebrows, and they both did that stupid “I know what you’re thinking” grinning thing again.

“I will literally kill both of you if you don’t stop that.” Asim picked up his butter knife, Psycho-style, and aimed it at them in jest. Then he threw his head down on the table and moaned pitifully. “I really like him. Help me fix it, please,” he mumbled into the table.

“If you want my opinion, I think your best bet is the green-eyed monster,” Jude answered.

Asim perked his head up. “What?”

Seth nodded in agreement with his fiancé. “Make him jealous. Nothing gets a man to pay closer attention than an unexpected third party. Make him think someone else wants you, and he might be a little more willing to stake a claim,” Seth argued.
