Chapter Seven

STERLING DROVE TOWARD the mountains. The last time he’d been up there, years ago, he’d seen a lot of summer cabins. If they could break into one, they might have just a day or two to recover. It wasn’t much, but it was the best he could do right now. He thought about a motel or hotel, but he didn’t want to put innocent people at risk. Getting the police involved was a no-go too. Against powerful magic, humans didn’t stand a chance. The one thing he knew for sure was that they couldn’t go home.

At any other time, that fact would have driven Sterling out of his mind, but now he accepted the situation. The only thing that really mattered was keeping Os’vald safe. To protect him, Sterling could put up with anything.

“Where are we going, exactly?” Os’vald asked.

“There’s a place up here filled with cabins that’s only open in the summer. It’s too cold and too snowy the rest of the year. I’m thinking we could squat in one of the smaller places.”

“Squat?”

“It’s what they call living in a place rent free.” Sterling kept glancing in the rearview mirror, making sure that traffic seemed normal.

“Squat?” Os’vald repeated the word and made a face.

“Squatting. Or to squat, I guess. I’ve never even broken into a place so...”

“We’ll figure it out.”

“Yeah.” Breaking into a cabin should be easier than trying to steal a car. Hopefully, the car wash had washed away any lingering magic. Of course, they wouldn’t know until it was too late.

What really pissed Sterling off was that, for the first time, he had something genuine to worry about, but he also had no solutions. He felt utterly drained of magic. He didn’t have the heart to tell his mate he may have used up all his ability blasting his brother. It had been hours since the attack and he didn’t feel so much as a tingle in his pinky. Worse, he looked like death warmed over and felt like it too. He swore he’d aged ten years in that moment. Even though all he wanted to do now was sleep, he forced himself to stay awake.

“Tell me about your brother.”

“Md’drich? Not much to tell.”

“Anything would help.”

“Help with what?”

“I don’t know. I think it would just help pass the time.” And keep him awake and focused. Maybe give him an edge if he had to fight the elf again. “I’d just feel better if I knew something about the guy hunting us.”

“Md’drich is the oldest, which means he thinks he has more of a right to the throne than anyone else but it doesn’t. Still, he’s proven time and time again that he’ll literally do anything to gain our father’s favor.”

“Your father doesn’t like him?”

“I don’t think my father likes anyone, really.” Os’vald kept watching behind them as Sterling navigated sharp switchbacks.

“Didn’t your father love your mother?”

“He loved all of our mothers. If he hadn’t, we wouldn’t be here.”

“I meant love as in care for, not sex.”

“Oh. Then no.
