Chapter Six

IT TOOK TWO HOURS FOR them to hitch a ride into the next biggest town and an hour after that to find a bunch of real lemon bars at a small local grocery. Ovver could smell if they’d been made with real lemon or not.

“The Dretler will not deal for fakes.”

Once they had them, Mitch picked up some actual lemons too. Ovver fondled them and sniffed them. Again, Mitch thought he’d start muttering my precious at any moment but he refrained. Seeing him with the lemons made him think it truly wasn’t a gold fetish so much as it was just a fascination for it. Like Ovver said, gold was rare and apparently so were citrus trees.

“There is another thing I think we should get.” Mitch added oranges and limes to their haul but he also added a cookbook.

After fondling the oranges and limes, Ovver considered the book. “Why have you need of a book?”

“It’s about cooking?”

“You ask me.”

“Damnit. Why do I always do that?”

“Again, you ask me.”

“You’re being a smart ass, aren’t you? Don’t answer. You are. A cute smartass, but still.” Mitch kissed his cheek. “I think it would be smart to have a cookbook.” Mitch flipped to the table of contents, found the recipe for lemon bars, then made sure it used real lemons. “Okay. I can make this.”

“The Halstropp have many fine cooks.”

“But they don’t know how to make lemon bars.”

“You can make these?” Ovver cradled the two boxes as if they contained his own flesh and blood. “I thought it took magic to blend sweet and sour.”

“Are your cooks magic?”

“The Halstropp do not use magic.”

“Right.” Mitch added the book to their horde of goods then they put everything back into the shopping cart.

“I will carry the lemon bars.”

“You don’t need to do that. They’re fine in the cart.” Mitch eased Ovver back by giving him one of the bars. “Just chill, okay?”

“I am of the fire.”

“Yes. You’re flaming.” Mitch giggled then paid for their purchases. As he pushed the cart outside, he realized they were just going to stand out like thumbs hammered raw. The only way to get back to the mine and the Dretler head was for him to do something he wouldn’t do under any other circumstances.

“You glare at the automobiles.”

“I’m looking for something old. Something I can...” Mitch’s gaze landed on an old Chevy Impala, just like grandfather’s old car, only this one had white paint.

Ovver didn’t talk as he was too busy making love to his lemon bar.

“Come on.” Mitch led him over to the old car. As casually as he could, Mitch checked out the area while pretending to be on his phone. No one seemed to pay them any attention despite Ovver being two heads taller than any other human in the area. Mitch didn’t see any security cameras. When he leaned over and touched his shoe, grabbing the hood of the car to balance himself, it felt warm. Whoever had driven the car had probably just gone inside.
