THINGS IN THE GATE ROOM WERE tense. Oliver and Brett tirelessly checked and rechecked the system. Cillian and Grandpa isolated themselves in the library to continue their research. I conducted a conference call with Paris, and I felt the tension in her voice. When she suggested I call Zoe for input, I initially balked. Then I figured it was probably for the best.

Zoe answered on the first ring, though she didn’t bother with a greeting. Instead, she screamed something to someone out of frame.

“I don’t care what you want,” she snapped. “Until I say otherwise, you’re trapped here. Deal with it.”

Her teenage daughter stormed into frame behind her mother. Sami’s black hair was in stark contrast to her mother’s blond locks. “Have I mentioned how much I hate you today?” Sami shrieked.

“Only about fifty times.” Zoe shook her head and focused on me. “Sorry about that. Having a teenager sucks.”

“Having parents sucks,” Sami shot back.

“I’m talking to Izzy!” Zoe looked as if she was one stick of dynamite short of implosion. “Shut your mouth and find your father.”

“Don’t send her looking for me,” a male voice ordered from Zoe’s right. “I’m minding my own business and making chili in the crockpot. You won’t eat if I don’t finish. Besides, it’s your turn to deal with her.”

I had to press my lips together to keep from laughing. Despite the chaos, I had a genuine fondness for the Winters family. Sami was at that awkward age where you could only like her fifty percent of the time, but I had no doubt she would grow into a fabulous adult.

“What’s up?” Zoe asked as Sami stomped around behind her. “Ignore my offspring. She’s melting down.”

“I noticed.” I cringed when Sami made a show of mimicking her mother behind Zoe’s back. “Should I even ask?”

“Zombies running all over town, and she wants to go to a dance,” Zoe replied. “I said she could go to the dance even though her father lodged a complaint on the record. I took one for the team and agreed to handle her father — we’re talking hot dogs in bed, magical massages and everything — and we agreed she could go to the dance with a boy. Unfortunately, the zombies changed that, and she’s not handling things well.”

“I can take care of myself,” Sami raged. “I should be able to go to the dance. They’re not real zombies, anyway. They don’t eat people.”

“That doesn’t mean they’re not dangerous,” Zoe fired back. “What did I tell you? Go bother your father.”

“It’s not my turn, Zoe,” Aric barked. “I need a break from the complaining. This house isn’t big enough for the three of us right now.”

“Then make her go outside and do yard work. We agreed that was the perfect punishment because she hates getting dirty.”

Aric appeared in the frame, leaning around a wall and giving his wife a pointed look. “You hate yard work and she learned it from you.” His voice was lower now. “We agreed that
