CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Sadie walked into the saloon, feeling slightly guilty that it was her second social visit in as many days. It was still before eight pm, and the thought of sitting alone in her motel room with hours to kill before bedtime, and nothing to do but think, didnât appeal.
Cooper hadnât spoken to her again after dropping her at the station, other than a curt âsee you in the morningâ before he had stomped off into the Station House and she had got into her snow truck. Sadie didnât know what to make of his weird mood. She had been half joking when she had accused him of being jealous, but it did seem to be the only reasonable explanation.
But Cooper, jealous, of her? The thought of him being attracted to her was unnerving. It didnât bode well for a good working relationship.
Not at all.
Yet, Sadie couldnât help grinning to herself at the thought. As stubborn and grumpy as he could be, Logan Cooper was a good guy⦠and not bad to look at, either.
âWhat is that little smirk all about?â Caz asked as Sadie approached the bar. The bar owner was already pouring Sadie a whiskey, and the possibility of a non-alcoholic drink that Sadie had been toying with was cast to the wind. A whiskey it was. âYou look like the cat that ate the canary. Catch any bad guys?â
âNo,â Sadie sighed. âItâs actually been a rough day. I was justâ¦thinking about something the Sheriff said.â She hoped that Caz would leave it there, but the other woman leaned over the bar, resting on her tattooed forearms, and eyed Sadie curiously. Sadie sipped her drink, not meeting the other womanâs gaze.
âAsk you out on a date, did he?â
âWhat? No, of course not!â Sadie nearly coughed on her drink as it burned its way down her throat. âThereâs nothing between me and the Sheriff. I told you; heâs just a colleague.â
And that was the truth of it, she told herself firmly. Whatever Cooperâs mood had been about, he would snap out of it. The last thing that she needed was to start complicating their professional relationship.
âMmm hmmm.â Making a sarcastic noise through closed lips, Caz looked as though she didnât believe a word. Ignoring her knowing look, Sadie took a gulp of her drink and tried to change the subject.
âDonât mind me; Iâm too jaded and too busy for a guy. I spend my time chasing down murderers, not men. But what about you; any dates on the horizon?â
Caz started cleaning a glass, a tired expression on her face that suddenly made her look a lot older than usual. Sadie guessed that the bartender was somewhere in her mid-thirties, just a few years older than Sadie, although the harsh Alaskan winters and lifestyle made many of the locals look older than their years.
âIâm sorry,â Sadie said. âI guess thatâs a touchy subject?â
Caz shrugged her strong shoulders. Although slightly butch, with her short hair, tattoos, and a penchant for shirts
