Chapter 20
Dylan
âPark there.â She points at the parking spot closest to the door that has a No Parking sign on it.
âWill you get towed?â I look over at her, but she is already out of the car and rushing to walk into the arena.
I get out and follow her, walking in and looking around. I spot the kid right away. He is sitting on the bench in front of the door with his head down. His brown hair shines, and I know itâs because he took a shower. His shoulders are slumped forward like heâs used to being left places and not being picked up, and my feet stop in my tracks when he looks up at me. His brown eyes meet mine, and the look brings me back to when I was seven years old.
âWhat do you mean they are all disconnected?â I hear Alex talking to a woman, but I just walk past her toward the little boy. He must be scared or, better yet, just numb, and that feeling is even worse than being scared.
âHey.â I squat down in front of the kid. âIâm Dylan.â He just looks at me, and his arms and legs are skinnier than they should be. âWhatâs your name?â The look he gives me is a look Iâve seen before. Itâs a look that was in my own eyes. Despair.
âMaddox.â His voice is monotone, and I know that heâs been in this situation before. People looking at you and feeling sorry for you.
âAre you hungry?â I ask, my stomach burning as I think about when his last meal was.
He just shrugs his shoulders, and I know thatâs rule number one for anyone who is ever in our shoes. Never let anyone in was my motto. My mother busted her ass for my father and us. Sorry, that is the wrong name for him; the sperm donor who would drag us down the black hole with him. No matter how much I tried to crawl out of that hole. âI can get you something to eat,â I say. âIt might just be something small, but â¦â
His eyes come to mine, and they look as if there is no life left in them. There is no lightness to them like the kids in my life. âHey,â Alex says. âMaddox, we are going to take you home.â She looks at me with a smile, pretending that everything is hunky-dory, and I know that itâs a fucking cycle. âI think your mom got held up.â
He doesnât say anything because what can you say. âYou have the address?â I ask her, and she nods. She stands up and holds out her hand for his, but Maddox just stands up beside her.
âYou must be tired, buddy.â I smile at him, wrapping my arm around him and putting it on his shoulder. âI remember when I was in hockey camp, and I would fall asleep on the bus.â I look at him as we get beside the car. âWhy
