CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Late at night, the usually quiet Delta Junction truck stop was an uncharacteristic hive of activity thanks to this crime. When Sadie pulled up outside, with Cowell in the passenger seat, she saw there were already three police cars parked under the truck stop’s bright floodlights that cast glaring beams, and deep shadows, over the stark forecourt and buildings.

She felt a sense of purpose within her, a feeling they had reached the conclusion of this case, and had arrested the perpetrator who had caused such death and destruction.

"I hope this is the killer caught," Cowell muttered, echoing her own thoughts. "I hope we can get this guy, lock him away forever."

But before she could question the perpetrator, Sadie knew she had to take a look at the scene, and prepare herself as best she could by reviewing the evidence. She didn’t want to go head to head with this ruthless murderer while being in any way unprepared. She took a moment, breathing in the frigid night air deeply as she prepared herself to take a look at this killer's latest gory work.

"Evening," she said shortly to the nearest police officer as they approached. "Agent Sadie Price. What's the background here?"

The police officer was a short man, wearing a fur hat and a heavy parka. His round face was somewhat protected from the cold by a bushy mustache. He didn’t look particularly pleased to see her, but Sadie acknowledged that standing out in the icy cold, late at night, at a bloody crime scene, was not going to make anyone look cheerful.

"I’m State Trooper Jessop, ma’am. We received a call about an hour ago, from someone using a payphone at the rest stop near Matanuska Glacier State Park. They said they'd noticed one of the truckers speaking to a woman on a motorcycle, and that they thought they'd seen him force her toward the tanker truck cab."

"Go on?"

"They were able to give a basic description of the truck. We set off on the hunt immediately, and found it parked up here. When my partner located the driver, Jack Evans, and asked him to open up for us to search, we found the biker's body in the sleeper cab, face up, with a clearly fatal head wound."

“Where was the driver?” Sadie asked.

“He was asleep, in the berthing, in the stop.”

Undoubtedly, this was the same modus operandi, Sadie realized. The only difference in the scenes seemed to be where the bodies were dumped, and that didn't seem to be a specific ritual for this killer. Perhaps he’d intended to move her and dump her again, and hadn’t yet done so.

"Did he resist arrest?" she asked.

The trooper nodded. "He wasn't too cooperative," he replied. "He was aggressive when we confronted him, but at the same time he swears he's innocent. He said that because he was sleeping in the berthing, in the truck stop building, anyone could have planted the body in his truck."

“So he’s using that as his excuse,” Sadie said thoughtfully, glancing at Cowell.
