CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Once we cleared the room and walked back downstairs into the High Table back in Akihabara, the air felt a little more settled. I called my armor to me once more while Merlin immediately walked away to speak with the young Ventricle from Ohio.

“Do you think they’ll do anything about it all?” Amabala wondered aloud, making me glance back at her. “About what’s coming?”

I shrugged. “No clue. I think they have a lot to worry about, but a big part of their whole existence and need for their services depends on the Normies remaining ignorant of our kind.” I scratched my head and a gust of air left me as I huffed with frustration. “I can’t blame them for that, but I can blame them for not wanting to put their people first. It just sucks.”

“It’s how they’ve always been.” Uncle Yen’s voice carried over my shoulder, prompting me to look back to see him standing there fully in his younger form as he looked me over. “You alright?”

I nodded. “I’m okay. You?”

“Concerned for you and what’s coming, but I’m alright for now.” His hand went to the back of his neck, as his other hand motioned to himself. “I suppose you wonder about this.”

“I’ve known you were hiding something since I started to be able to see auras around other creatures, but I figured you had a good reason not to show off before now.” His eyebrows shot up at that, but he just sighed and shook his head. “Are you okay with people seeing it?”

“I have been for a while now, but I just didn’t know what to do about it all when you first came into the picture. Besides, with all the stress I’ve been under lately, it’s just been too much to keep the image up.” He looked at the others who seemed nonplussed about his chatter. “This was a gift from my…”

He hesitated and I frowned at him, not really understanding what he was talking about, but it was Arden who grunted, “Tell him, Yenasi.” So, everyone else knew all this time. Huh. I decided immediately it wasn’t worth bringing up anytime soon, if ever.

He opened and closed his mouth, then cleared his throat. “This, my slow aging and youthful appearance, is from my boyfriend.” My eyebrows raised and he sighed. “Listen, I know it’s odd to hear that, but hear me out.”

I put up a hand and he stopped, Arden looking at me strangely, almost disapprovingly, as I spoke. “I don’t care.” Uncle Yen looked shocked. “I’m dating a goddess and an oni at the same time, together. You can date and love who you want, Uncle Yen. It’s not going to change how I feel about you, and you sure as fuck don’t owe me an explanation. I only wish you had trusted me sooner with this.”

He smiled at me softly, then muttered, “I knew you were different from the rest of the family, my boy. And I am sorry for not trusting you more sooner, but thank you.
