Long after Kyle felt Irish’s muscles go slack, he continued to massage her gently, relishing the feel of her silky softness beneath his fingers. Her skin, the color of fine porcelain touched with honey, was unblemished except for faint blue splotches from the fall on her hip and three small moles that formed a triangle on her right shoulder blade.

Intriguing little moles that begged his touch.

He brushed the spot lightly with the pads of his fingers. The simple exploration didn’t satisfy him. He wanted to press his lips against her warm skin and taste her with his tongue, but he didn’t dare. She trusted him.

“Irish,” he whispered.

She didn’t stir. Bless her heart, she was sound asleep. His hands stilled, and he studied the side of her face that was turned toward him. With her makeup washed away, the scars on her left cheek were faintly visible. Knowing what pain that she must have endured, both physically and emotionally, angered him. What demented degenerate could have wantonly inflicted such agony?

Tremendous feelings of tenderness welled up from his chest and caught in his throat. He couldn’t abide the idea of anyone hurting Irish again, of anyone crushing her vibrant spirit or causing her one moment’s suffering. Even Jackson’s stunt with the horseback riding made him furious. A potent sense of protectiveness unfurled inside him, a sense so strong that it was almost palpable, and brought a strange urge to take up a shield and sword and stand in front of her to slay dragons and be her champion.

Maybe, for the first time in his life, Kyle Rutledge was truly falling in love. He couldn’t explain why it had happened now, with this woman, but he couldn’t deny the intense emotions she stirred in him.

Very carefully, he leaned over and touched his lips to the little triangle of moles, then eased off the bed and pulled the sheet over her. She needed to rest. He’d check on her later.

After he adjusted the blinds to darken the room, he picked up his boots and slipped quietly out of the suite.

Just as he eased the latch to, a hand clamped on his shoulder. “Caught ya with your boots in your hand,” Jackson said, chuckling. “Been stealing a little nooky from the lovely lady?”

Sudden anger blazed up in Kyle like the flash of a back draft in a burning building. “You bastard!” Before he thought, he drew back and punched his cousin.

Jackson staggered and caught himself against a wall. Rubbing his chin, he frowned at Kyle. “What the hell was that for?”

“You’ve got a nasty mouth and a nasty mind, and you almost killed Irish on that damned horse. She can barely walk.”

“Hey, man, I’m sorry for what I said. I was just kidding you. It was a joke.”

Kyle scowled. “You don’t see me laughing. And
