True stopped at a red light.

Red Fords seemed to be everywhere. To Carr, the phenomenon was normal and familiar. Neither he nor True discussed it. They understood that when an investigation centers on a particular clue, the investigator will, without a doubt, find it more than once.

He remembered searching the streets of Los Angeles years ago for a twenties passer with a star tattoo on the back of his right hand. As if a curtain had been raised on a new world, it seemed that every bar, alley, and coffee shop was filled with star tattooed skin. Carr gave up looking while sitting in a barber chair. He noticed that his barber of ten years had a star on the back of his hand.

Carr pointed across the street. "There's another one."

True shot across two lanes and pulled into a gas station. An attendant was washing the front window of the Ford. The man in the driver's seat wore dark clothing.

True and Carr approached the pickup cautiously. The man inside wore a policeman's uniform.

They turned and got back in the sedan.

True looked at his watch. "Four o'clock. He's probably just going on night duty."

A few minutes later a red '58 Ford full of teenagers pulled in front of them from a high school parking lot. Carr shook his head.

Carr and True searched for Freddie Roth's Ford until 3:00 A.M. and ended up renting a room at the Oasis Motel, at the government rate.
