It’s dark and rainy and muddy outside, and Candace is pacing anxiously between the trees to the east of BCCF, mentally reviewing their plan for the fifth time.

Get Vanessa in. Check.

Shut down the lights and the security system. Check.

Wipe all of the visiting records and camera footage from the weekend. Check.

Cut the wires on the chain-link fence. Check.

Those were Candace’s sections of the plan. Judging by the faint shriek of metal from the visiting room, Vanessa is handling her own portions with her usual aplomb. All they need now is their means of egress, and‍—

Right on cue, the dirt shifts beneath her feet. She scrambles backward as the hardy tree they identified on Thursday creaks ominously, its roots groaning out of the ground. It teeters precariously before collapsing towards the building, falling faster and faster‍—

It hits the windows with the shatter of glass and a lurch that rattles Candace’s teeth. The sharp chorus of screams from inside makes her heart seize, but she forces the sensation down.

For the best. For the best. For the‍—

Two dark shapes appear in the window, scrambling outside unnoticed and bolting across the exposed strip of grass between the prison and the fence. They wedge through the gap Candace cut, make a beeline for her tree, meet her just out of sight of the windows‍—

Marcus stops short. “Kapur!” he booms. “What is this?”

“I told you I had someone on the outside,” Vanessa says defensively. “We’re all on board to stop DOSA. Enemies of enemies.”

Marcus doesn’t move. “Ampere is one of the original heroes,” he says, turning to Vanessa with narrowed eyes. “Part of the initial coalition that formed directly after the DP-11s were stolen. She is not to be trusted.”

“She is now,” Vanessa stresses. “Boss, Will Akbar and I have been working with them to stop the Coyotes, okay? To stop the Coyotes and DOSA and General Barnes. We need to prioritize Base City’s safety. That’s always been the point, right?”

“Not with the heroes who have opposed me since the beginning.” Marcus’s jaw is set in a hard line. “They are just as bad as the police. They will not hesitate to double-cross me if I help them. There is nothing to gain and everything to lose.”

Vanessa throws a frantic glance at Candace, desperation creeping into her voice. “Boss‍—‍”

The plan was for Candace not to reveal her identity until they were safely away from the prison. To prioritize speed over explanations, and to make sure the jailbreak was really a jailbreak before discussing the finer details.

To save that particular revelation for a time when Marcus‍—and Candace‍—could really process it.

But right now, Marcus isn’t budging. Vanessa’s attempts to convince him aren’t working.

And the police will be here any minute.

“We don’t have time for this,” Candace snaps, and she whips off her mask. “Marcus, are you going to help us or not? If you are, we need to move now.”

Marcus goes absolutely still. He stares at Candace for a long moment, a blank moment, like he can’t quite process what he’s seeing.
