CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Jackâs phone rang over the SUVâs speakers as he drove himself and Kelly back to the Fayetteville field office. âJack Harper,â he answered.
âItâs Nadia. Ah, Jack, thereâs a place called Bullâs-eye Ammo & Sports in Fayetteville that sells Master Shot arrows.â
âDirections?â He glanced over at Kelly, who was in the middle of wiping her face with a tissue, using the mirror on the back of the visor. She flipped it up.
âOne second⦠Bullâs-eye? That was a name on the Duransâ bank statement.â She scrambled for her phone.
âWeâll go pay them a visit now,â Jack said to Nadia. âWhat about other retailers near the previous murders?â
âYep, I have some names for you, which Iâll email.â
Jack wasnât sure if he was breathing easier or heavier, but it was always one freaking clue in a caseâthe one piece that had everything clicking together. Could they be onto something now that would take them to the Leopard?
âTurn here, Jack,â Kelly burst out.
âRight here?â He pointed to the street they were quickly approaching.
âYeah.â
Jack yanked the wheel, and the SUV swerved, causing Kelly to reach for the oh-shit bar.
âYou guys still in one piece?â Nadia asked, humor lighting her voice, and Jack realized she didnât know about Agent Shaw.
Jack looked over at Kelly again. She was pale and still had a good hold on the bar. âSo far,â he answered.
Kellyâs mouth gaped open in panic⦠No, she was panting from nerves.
âThere is something you should know.â Jack went on to tell Nadia about the explosion and Shaw.
âOh my god,â Nadia gasped out. âI sure hope sheâll be all right.â
âThat makes all of us.â
âI bet. Be careful.â
Jack thanked her and ended the call. Being careful was always the plan. He glanced over at Kelly, who had lowered her arm and was pointing, indicating for Jack to take the next left. He switched lanes and continued talking.
âItâs possible that Mark and our unsub ran into each other at this store. You donât happen to remember when Duran made the charge here?â
âNot off the top, no,â Kelly said. âBullâs-eye is right there.â
In front of them on the right was a large road-front sign announcing the place. At least Jack had lots of advance notice this time. He signaled, turned in, and parked. Then his phone rang.
The caller identified himself as one of the crime scene investigators working out at the cabin. âWe found pieces of what we believe was a cell phone. It was likely used as a denotator.â
âSo the explosion was remotely triggered?â Jack asked, daring to feel a little hope that he hadnât caused it by a misplacement of his foot.
âIt looks that way. We also recovered fragments of a motion-triggered camera.â
âSo he was watching us⦠No trigger plate?â He just wanted to hear it for certain.
âNot that we can determine. More likely he was watching and chose to denotate when he wanted to.â
That news only ended up delivering a trace of relief. He was still the reason his team and Shaw had been at the cabin in the first place.
