Elish took the stairs up to the third floor two at a time. What did it signify, the fact that Ora knew Gideon, knew him well enough to refer to him as “Gideon” rather than “Yehuda’s brother,” which would have left room for doubt, because Gideon was a member of a party that made its views on religion known? What did it mean? Luckily, Nathaniel had shown up just in time, forcing them to wrap things up. He left having made a vague promise to send a description of the course he was offering to teach, as well as a printout of the lecture he’d already given, and she would then give him an answer regarding next semester. It was already too late for this semester.

Eitan was on his way out, locking his office door when Elish called his name from behind. He turned around, patted Elish’s shoulder, then recoiled. “What happened to you?”

Elish said, “I know you’re rushing off, but do me a favor and answer two quick questions. Who’s Nathaniel, the boy who just walked into Ora Anatot’s office, and is there any connection between Ora and Yehuda Menuhin’s brother?”

Eitan said, “Say, are you sure this detective madness isn’t a kind of age-thirty crisis? I don’t understand why you need to know all this crap. Nathaniel is Ora’s son. He’s been hanging around here a lot this past year. And as to your second question, you must mean that deputy minister from Shinui. I need to stop at the secretary’s office to grab some worksheets.”

While Elish waited, he watched, amused, as a student tried in vain to shove a thick folder into the narrow opening of one of the professors’ mailboxes. How is it, he thought, that in third-millennium Israel, ergonomics was still one of the least valued professions?

As he walked out of the office, Eitan almost bumped into the student, who had tired of her attempt to bend the rules of spatial distribution in her favor and was now storming in to see the secretary. “So,” said Eitan, “it turns out our secretary knows Ora from college. Gideon Menuhin and Ora Anatot used to be a couple, briefly, when they were younger. You got time for coffee?”
