Chapter 11
Those who disliked Fusil could invariably cite half a dozen reasons why they were justified in doing so: those who liked him seldom said more than that he was the most loyal of men.
He always tried to keep Sundays clear of work (if he didn’t, Josephine complained bitterly), but it never occurred to him not to spend part of Sunday morning visiting Wells. Even though he had refused to have Wells in C.I.D. on a permanent basis, because Wells had once served with C.I.D. he had become part of the team.
“Sorry I couldn’t get here before,” Fusil said. Both men understood that had Wells been seriously injured he would have come immediately whatever the pressure of work. “Kerr said you were making out all right?”
“I’m right back to normal, sir.”
“That’s great.”
Heather asked Fusil if he’d like some coffee and then left the sitting room to go through to the kitchen to make it.
“I take it you still can’t add anything useful?” Fusil asked.
Wells shook his head. “I’ve tried all I can, but not come up with anything fresh.”
“Vehicles phoned through their report on the Granada late yesterday. Completely negative. Any more thoughts on why the heavies attacked you?”
“It can only be because I identified Mereton.”
Fusil took his pipe from a pocket and began to rub the bowl against the palm of his left hand. “Have you had time to question him again?”
“I saw him at home yesterday morning. He says he was there on the evening of the first and his wife backs him up. She’s lying.”
“Why d’you say that?”
“The way she looked and spoke.”
“Impressions, not proof.”
“I know. But in this case impressions count for just as much.”
“If we’re to get anywhere, we need proof.”
“That should be easy. Show a photo of him to Vi Padstone and Amy Stewart. They’ll identify him smartly enough.”
“Have you done anything about getting hold of a photo?”
“No, I haven’t.”
“Why not?”
“I was going to see if the local press could help — in his position, he’s bound to have been in it at some time or another — but this morning I got orders from Mr Karminski.”
“Orders about what?”
“To keep on concentrating on the Hans Crescent job. I was trying to get hold of my grasser before I got bashed around, but couldn’t find him and, for that much, still can’t. I’m beginning to wonder if something’s happened to him.”
Fusil looked sharply at Wells, then relaxed. “Did Mereton’s house suggest anything to you?”
“There’s no fortune been spent on it. I only saw the hall and sitting room, but these days people usually start spending money in the sitting room. No video or music centre, hired T.V. and a very ordinary set, shabby furniture. I asked him what car he ran and it’s a four-year-old Marina: just the one.”
Fusil spoke sharply. “Then if he’s been taking bribes and not been spending money on the house or cars, where would you guess he has been spending it? Women?”
“Not if one accepts what Amy Stewart said. She
