I was really shocked at what happened. Afterwards, only a few people wanted to talk to me about the specifics of my journey, but what they wanted to do was open up and share with me about their journey. They felt like they could be vulnerable because they saw me do it and realized they can do that too. It’s not scary.

And the class I taught changed after that. Students started talking about a lot of the pain that they had gone through. Some students had been physically abused or sexually abused, and some students had been raped. One student wrote a piece about her father raping her. It was the first time she’d ever talked about it. This was over several weeks of course, but it was like a dam opened on the entire class.
