Chapter Fourteen

With Callie at my Dad’s house, Mom took off to be with Samuel. As stunned as we both were by Dad’s confession, Mom is taking it much better than I thought she would. She may actually be over him.

Mom’s gone, Callie’s gone, and I am alone.

And I have had too much time to think.

I’ve obsessed over Dad and Grace, over being a new sister at thirty, but there is one thing that is absolutely haunting me: Braden, and his reason for incarceration. It didn’t really matter to me until I realized who he is, but now it’s front and center in my mind.

Tears escape my eyes, but I bat them away. I’m lost, lonely, not sure what to do, how to process the plethora of shit sitting in front of me.

I need Rona. She’ll know what to do. I text her, please come over, I need you!

She replies, on my way. No questions, no hesitation. My bestie knows when I need her.

Fifteen minutes later, she’s busting through my door, looking worried but totally prepared for whatever I need. “What’s wrong?” she says, her voice strained with concern. “You look terrible.”

Bursting into tears, I sink onto the couch, and then she’s there, pulling me into her arms, comforting me while I breakdown. It takes a while for me to compose myself, but then I do, and the story of my dad and Grace’s pending miracle baby and the whole Braden thing spills from my lips.

Sitting back, Rona silently takes it all in, but the shock is visible. Once I’ve finished, she’s pensive for a minute and then says, “So, your dad and Grace—you can’t really do anything but support them. I mean, as pissed as you are, it’s their lives, their marriage. But, what are you going to do about Braden?”

Huffing, I release a resounding sigh. “I literally have no idea. I mean, he’s an ex-con—I can’t have that in Callie’s life.”

Raising her hand, she cuts in. “Uh-uh. I’ve never known you to be anything but a forgiving, kind-hearted person. His prison record isn’t what’s really bothering you. It’s a convenient excuse, but at the end of the day and at the very least, you know you have to tell him. If you don’t, you’ll never forgive yourself.”

She’s right. I know it. Nodding, an idea pops into my head. “Mulling over his prison record is pointless, you’re right. I can easily find out what he did and then I can move on.”

Rona cocks an eyebrow, tilting her head while she considers. “The Internet?”

“Yup.” My eyes plead with her, willing her to back me up on this. “I need to know. Why stew on something when the answers are right at my fingertips? I’ll be right back.” Racing from the room, I grab my laptop and bring it into the living room to set up on the coffee table.

I’m on a mission, determined to rip the bandage off. The Internet can be both a blessing and a curse. Determined to discover Braden’s dirty little secret, I spend all of about two seconds searching: Braden Howe arrest.
