“Yes, Chloe, I do. I want you. That’s all that matters.”

She lifts herself off me and sits on the bed, hugging her knees.

I lay on my side and look up at her, then run my fingers down her silky legs. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”

She looks down at me then lies on her side facing me. I run feather-like fingers down her arm and her waist.

“It’s just… how can this work between us? My life is in New York, and yours is here. If you’re not in Vixen Falls, then you’re traveling to play ball. I don’t know if I can be part of that world.”

What she’s saying is true, but I’d do anything to keep her with me.

I can’t lose her again, so I cup her face. “We can make it work. I mean, you can work from here. Do you have to work in New York?”

“Oh, no way! You don’t have the right to ask me to leave my job,” she snaps, and the minute she says the words, I wish I could take mine back. I didn’t think when I let those words slide out of my mouth.

She stands and drags the sheet with her, covering her body.

“Chloe, wait! I’m sorry.” I slide off the bed and sit on the edge, bringing her into me, so she’s standing between my thighs. “Look at me,” I ask, and even though she’s angry, she does. “I’m sorry, okay? I shouldn’t have said that. It came out all wrong.”

Chloe sighs, then sits on my knee, and I wrap my arms around her.

“I just don’t know what to do. Or how to do this. I don’t want to have a long-distance relationship. I want you with me. I can’t imagine not seeing you every day when possible.”

Tears well in her eyes.

“Don’t cry, I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“You haven’t,” she says sniffling. “It’s just… well, I never thought I’d be here in your arms again. And now that I am, our jobs are going to keep us apart.
