Chapter Fifteen

“Hold up, hold up, hold up. Let me get all this straight.” Beth was sitting on the floor of Sydney’s new apartment. She had recently taken up yoga and was now practicing her stretches and poses on Sydney’s rug.

Needing to vent, Sydney had invited her friend over and somewhat reluctantly divulged the less than flattering series of events she had recently found herself a part of. She was finding it harder to disclose her feelings now that Beth had moved on from a basic butterfly stretch and was now addressing her more directly from a warrior pose.

“Hot girl you work with…”

“Birdy,” Sydney interjected.

Beth lunged forward on her left leg several times. “Yeah, yeah. Hot girl you work with is in fact a lesbian, which you know because the two of you have been flirting ceaselessly. Also, hot girl is engaged.”

“Right, but I didn’t know that at first.”

“Okay, so you guys print shirts together and flirt shamelessly.”

“I thought she was flirting but it might have been just me,” Sydney added quickly, feeling the need to defend Birdy.

“It sounds like she was flirting back. And then you find out she’s engaged by accidentally meeting her fiancée?” Beth switched her pose, now leading with her right leg. As she lunged, her knee made a frightening popping sound, which she ignored.

“Yeah.”

“But you didn’t end it there?” Beth asked incredulously. “Instead you went to a concert and almost kissed, you went swimming and almost kissed, she helped you move and you almost kissed, you printed her goddamn wedding invitations and almost kissed… Jesus, Sydney. You’re a real glutton for punishment. Can you do anything without almost kissing the girl?”

Already sitting balled up on the couch, knees pulled to her chest, Sydney held herself together even tighter at Beth’s unsympathetic words. She covered her face in embarrassment. “I know, I know! Honestly, I have no idea what’s wrong with me. I should be running as fast as I can from this woman. It’s just that I really like her, Beth. She’s gotten under my skin and I don’t know what to do about it.”

“Does she feel the same way? Or is this just physical for her?”

Sydney was relieved when Beth sat back down and resumed a butterfly stretch position. It was hard to spill her guts while Beth attempted yoga. “I don’t know. I think—or hope—she might have some real feelings. Like, I don’t feel she’s just toying with me, you know? Or fucking around with me because she can. I’m getting so many mixed messages from her, but I get the feeling she’s confused… Like maybe she could have feelings for me but she’s in too deep in her relationship to see it.”

Beth held both her ankles and attempted to extend her legs while pulling her heels away from the ground. She looked like an egg rolling around on the carpet.

“Maybe you should respect that, Syd. If she’s in that deep, you can’t dive in after her. At some point she’s going to have to surface for you.
