CHAPTER FOURTEEN

I was halfway home when Elise called.

“Got some more info on Arthur Godwin.” She sounded a bit breathless.

“Boy, that was fast. Hey, are you okay? You sound like you’ve been running a marathon.”

“Um, yeah, I’m fine.” The sound of air being sucked in. “I was already checking out some more things about Godwin when you texted.” She cleared her throat. “He isn’t listed on the charter service’s paperwork as a co-owner. It’s a sole proprietorship.” Her voice got steadier as she spoke.

“Hmm, interesting. Especially since he referred to ‘his partner,’ quote, unquote, several times during the interview I just had with him.”

“And…” Elise’s voice sounded more normal now, “he was accused of stealing gas from an airplane at least once before.”

“Oh?” Sorry, Russ, I mentally apologized for doubting him.

“I found a small claims case filed against him for five-hundred dollars, by a Franklin Jarvis, who claimed Godwin had siphoned one of his plane’s fuel tanks dry and was starting on the other one when Jarvis caught him.”

“Hmm, I wonder why Sonny didn’t mention that.”

“He might not have known. The case was settled out of court, and it might have had a non-disclosure agreement as part of the settlement.”

“In which case,” I said, “neither party could talk about it. Still, I can’t imagine that this Jarvis guy wouldn’t have complained to Sonny at the time that it happened.”

“Maybe he did, but after the settlement, he might’ve asked Sonny to keep it to himself.”

“Okay, that makes sense,” I said, “and it also would explain why Sonny took Russ’s word over Godwin’s when Russ accused him of the same thing.”

“And Godwin’s keeping his name off of anything official, in case there were rumors that might nix their set-up at Gainesville Regional.”

“But why would his partner go along with that?” I asked.

Elise chuckled softly. “The partner is much younger, and guess what his wife’s maiden name is.”

“Godwin. She’s Art’s daughter?”

“Yes, and their address is an apartment in northeast Gainesville, an okay part of town but not the wealthiest, whereas Godwin and his wife own a house on a ten-acre property south of Gainesville, assessed for over $400,000.”

I whistled softly. “Daddy-in-law has the bucks, but son-in-law has the clean reputation.”

“So they go into business together,” Elise finished.

“Hmm, I wonder if Godwin might see my client as some kind of threat, that he might rat him out to the folks at the Gainesville airport?”

“Could be,” Elise said. “On Talbott, I couldn’t find much. He’s a high-priced lawyer, has led a pretty clean life. No lawsuits, nothing I can find that indicates anger issues. He might have them, but they haven’t led to anything that leaves an electronic trail. I’m going to dig a little deeper into both his and Godwin’s finances, as much as I can.”

“Do you have a phone number for Talbott?” I asked as I pulled off onto the shoulder of the country road I was on. Elise gave me the number and I added him to the contacts on my phone.

She and I signed off, and I called Nolan Talbott.
