When I get to Digger’s office, Laslo is there again. “Did you move in here or something?” I ask. He has been even more up in Digger’s ass than usual lately.

“I wanted the details of what went down in Memphis this morning.” Laslo eyes me up and down with bloodshot eyes. “I didn’t think you’d have to resort to blowing up a house to take care of one little problem.”

“That little problem turned out to be a shit show,” I tell him. “There was another crew there to off Johnny and get the information you wanted.”

“Another crew?” Digger’s face lifts with surprise that I’m sure he’s not faking. He turns to Laslo. “You know anything about this?”

“Devon was obviously into some illicit endeavors,” Laslo says in an anxious tone. “We are likely not the only dangerous people he offended. What’s important is that you secured the information Devon was in the middle of possessing,”

“Sorry, buddy, I was a little too busy offing Johnny and the hacker while fighting off five other guys who wanted to kill me.”

“That’s unacceptable.”

“What’s unacceptable,” I bark back at him, “is your theory that those guys weren’t after the same info you are. That was their mission, but don’t worry, buddy. I saved your ass. I made sure that zip drive blew up in the fire. I’ll be glad to accept a bottle of Macallan 25 as thanks.”

Laslo stutters and starts in response, and Digger takes over the meeting. “Was the crew another MC?”

“No,” I respond. “These guys were tall, blond, and wearing fucking expensive suits.”

The look of recognition on Digger’s face is obvious. It triggers the memory of the remark Digger made about important clients that were going to help take the Reivers to the next level at our meeting yesterday morning. That plus the story Daisy told me about the strange, tall blond men in suits Laslo had told her to be extra nice to.

I think we’re on to something.

After that, Digger and Laslo can’t get me out of their office fast enough. I even wrangle the next day off from Digger. He’s too distracted to fight me on it.

There’s a text on my phone from Daisy demanding I pick up two large deep-dish pizzas from Frannie’s. A minute later, I get a text asking if we have a blender, and I wonder if maybe she’s been drinking.

Sure enough, when I get home I find a shiny-eyed Daisy and a more relaxed Johnny sitting out on the porch laughing with a half-empty bottle of tequila between them.

Again, that petty jealousy creeps up inside me at the easy way they seem to have reclaimed their friendship.

I set the boxes down on the table. As they attack the pizzas, I pick up the bottle and chug a few shots’ worth of tequila down.

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.

“That’s why I married you,” Daisy says, hiccupping.

I relax into a chair and give a sigh of relief. It’s been one hell of a long day.

“How did the meeting go with Digger?” Johnny asks.
