Ginger hadn't been back at the office long when the news came through that Theo's identity was now common knowledge among the media. Deciding that the police would've told his family she started packing up her stuff to head over and see if she could get any more information from them.

She noticed her editor watching her suspiciously from his glass-fronted office as she left and turned to give him a beaming smile and a cheery wave. Turning her head quickly she just managed to avoid the hand gesture he made that indicated he wanted her to come in. Ginger caught it out of the corner of her eye but hoped he hadn't clocked that she'd seen it and chosen to ignore him.

The drive to the Stanmoor estate didn't take long, but it may as well have been the other side of the country for its different appearance. Whereas most of her town consisted of either chocolate box cottages or the more modern culdesacs made up of newly built semi-detached homes and townhouses. This large, sprawling, estate had been added to the town forty years ago and not much had been done to maintain it ever since. The whole area was run down, weeds grew through the cracks in the roads and pavements, and old appliances were stacked around the bin sheds and in gardens. In the middle was a children's park, but Ginger couldn't imagine anyone letting their child play there. The equipment looked dangerously neglected and from the empty cans and takeout wrappers that littered the floor, its only use was as a hangout by the local teenagers.

Every available surface had been decorated with graffiti, and not of the type that looked artistic and displayed the perpetrator's talents. This was mostly gang tags, swear words, and suggestions that a girl called Chantelle loved Vic's cock. It made Ginger wrinkle her nose. Not that she was a prude, far from it, but she did strongly feel that this was yet another indication of how young men thought it was okay to sexualise their female peers.

Feeling as though someone on the estate was watching her from behind their grubby net curtains she headed to the address she had for Theo's mum. Who knew what sort of dodgy character could be eyeing her up and waiting for an opportunity to mug her or worse.

Theo's mum lived in a shabby, run-down house that overlooked the play area. Ginger could imagine that when Theo was small this would've been a prime location and wondered if it still was. The woman who answered her knock was small, thin, and worn-looking. Mrs Adams wiped her chapped hands on her jeans as she gave her visitor an inquisitive look. Her eyes were red-rimmed and puffy and Ginger could tell she'd been crying. It gave the journalist a second of regret that she was adding to the woman's grief, but she ignored it as she always did.

"Hi Mrs Adams, I'm Ginger Burrows and I write for the local paper.
