Chapter 12

I wanted to die, bury myself underground, let the worms and bugs eat me, and then die again. Humiliated didn’t even begin to describe how I was feeling in that moment. I kept opening my mouth, but nothing would come out. I was naked… with Patrick… in a cave. God help me.

Patrick sat up smiling. Damn him. “Thank you, Trenton. They may still come in handy. I’m not sure if I’m fully healed as I haven’t left the ground.”

I wanted to slap him.

Trenton chuckled and then looked at what I knew was my flushed face. “It’s all right, Lucy. I understand, and I don’t mind. I’m rather glad this happened to be honest.”

What? He was happy? He had just kissed me before he left. Oh. Right. They both wanted to marry me. So, this was okay in their eyes. I mentally slapped myself, but still, I was completely embarrassed, and I would never allow voyeurism. Ever. That was where I drew the line.

I shook my head, knowing my face was still tomato red. “Thank you for your blessing, Trenton, but if you don’t mind, I think we should be getting dressed and finding Tobias now. I’m happy you made it back safely.”

“Yes, did you run into any trouble along the way?” Patrick asked him, sitting up.

“Surprisingly, no.” Trenton tossed three red oblong stones around in his hand. “I didn’t see or hear anyone lurking about. I find it a bit odd.”

“Please, gentlemen. I need to get dressed. Trenton, do turn around—will you?” I was attempting to be sweet, but we needed to hurry now that he was back with the stones. I had lost myself in the heat of the moment, and well, I did heal Patrick, so it wasn’t—I just needed to stop that thought. What was done was done.

“As you wish.” Trenton turned and chuckled to himself.

I did not find this funny in the least, but no matter. Patrick and I stood, and I dressed as quickly as possible. There was very little lighting, and I was stumbling all over the place trying to find my knickers. Thank God I hadn’t worn a corset. That would have been dreadful. Now I understood a bit of Catherine’s disdain for the bloody undergarment. It honestly was very constricting, and in a time like this, I was thankful I had left mine behind. I would be rethinking my wardrobe after this journey. Definitely not trousers, but maybe a dress along the lines of what Catherine had worn to her coronation. Yes, I thought to myself and smiled. That would do nicely.

“Lucy, why are you smiling?” Patrick turned to me.

Crap. It seemed my inner thoughts were showing on the outside again. I needed to remember myself better.

“Oh, nothing at all.” I straightened my dress, slipping on my shoes. “Are we ready, gentlemen?”

“Right. I’ll lead the way.” Trenton handed Patrick a healing stone. “Keep this in your pocket just in case.”

Patrick did as Trenton asked, and we followed him through the tunnel.
